Started by: GOLDEN BEAR (6555)

Well thats done and dusted for another 12 months no joy of going to the final this year. I have nowt much to say about last night's game we seemed to be void of any idea's far too much trying to go thro middle you can't play that type of rugby anymore the ball rarely went to the wings.

never mind. At least Sts and leeds won't win it either. wigan canconcentrate on Superleague and hopefully get some players back and do well. I will be rooting for Hull in the challenge Cup final.

I remember the visit to Wembley 50 years ago what a disappointment in the end , but we got there

I remember that final in '66 very well, Aussie94! No hooker [Colin Clarke banned for an unprecedented 2 games for a technical offence], Murphy and co running offisde at almost every play-the-ball - or so it seemed. A penalty kick to touch in those days resulted in a scrum down, which Saints inevitably won, especially with ex-Wiganer Bill Sayer hooking against a prop forward! The worst final ever, in my opinion.

I agree gideonfel - my first Wembley and worst! Tom Woosey was the Wigan hooker that day - listened to the Clay Cooper fight on way home in uncle Tommys car

Guys I still have night mares about the 61 and 66 finals .They still hurt, but life goes on . And now I am hoping the Cronulla Sharks can go all the way this year. Our best chance for a long time . sorry to see the loss against Hull.

Hello Gideonfel,
whilst reading your comment it threw up a huge question mark in my head! With respect to Colin Clark not being able to play in that debacle of a final in 1966 i am sure it was just 1 game ban he got, but before answering you gideonfel, i have spent loads of time on google ,wigan warriors site ,anything i could possibly look into the actual record of his ban. I can't believe it i found all about the game but as to COLIN 's ban ...ZILCH and it really annoyed me .
The only reason i think it was 1 gideonfel was i do remember going to the match were he was actually "SENTOFF" which back then was totally inheard of. My dad (god bless him) and i were at the match like i said and the whole contingent of wigan speckies could not comprehend the sending off!! In those days it was common practice for penalties to be given for ""( feet up)"" in the scrum ,but to send a player off ..... never we all thought at that time that it was the usual crap from the H/Q and where poss hinder Wigan, which by the way happens today , so back to the story that week-end when we came home i sat down to try and write a letter to the then Lancashire evening post ( pink) for which i won a tie WOW. It was for my article condemning the R/L/H/Q. on the shocking display by the ref. SO i don't think any of us can claim to be right just yet gideonfel but thank you it brought back many memories happy (dad)sad the game and resulting final great talking with you .

Hi Golden Bear! Colin Clarke was sent off against Leeds in the 2nd round of the Championship play-offs by referee Laurie Gant, who had sent him off in the past. Wigan won 22-5 and got through to the semi-final against Halifax [Wigan lost that one 25-12!]. If Clarke had been suspended for one game he would have been available for selection at Wembley. Unfortunately he was suspended 2 matches and therefore missed the final. Wigan's Vice-Chairman [at the time] Norman Bibby was quoted in the local press: 'It's a harsh decision, considering Clarke's offence was only technical. We expected him to get a one match suspension. We wouldn't have grumbled at that.' Of course, all of the foregoing comes courtesy of my [now decaying] scrapbook! You don't think I remembered all these details on my own do you, GB! [By the way, I tried to put a scan of the article on here but somehow it won't let me! Either that or I'm guilty of a technical offence myself!]

OH Well done Gideonfel, at long, long last i can sleep now i am ever grateful for you finding the truth at last. Now all the names fall into place as if it were last week. That Laurie Gant was a reet git especially against Wigan. The other name Norman Bibby there's a name not to be forgotten,
finally it's a pity that you could not scan it ,but don't worry i have not a clue how to put photo'd on either haha!
My old albums are in the attic ( somewhere) unless wife has tossed them away, but Gideonfel once again i have to say thank-you very much and if owt comes up again i'll be on here asking you ok thanks mate!!!!!!!

Bill Sayer always reckoned he would have won all the scrums even if Colin Clarke had played.
I suspect it was a bit tongue-in-cheek

I remember Bill well he has been in our house more times than i have had hot dinners. The reason he was a good mate with my cousin Bill Bretherton i was about 14/15 and would sit in a corner listening to all their goings on and off the field,he often said if Wigan had just slipped a few quid extra in his packet he would have still been a Wigan player, but at the time which happened a lot at Wigan they were as tight as a drum.I bet there are a lot of folk on here remember how we knew ""money was not on"" this is true when the music blasted out "ENTRY OF THE GLADIATORS" if WIGAN did not come out first we knew the money was off and we would end up losing. Those were the days when who-ever was in charge before the start he would go into dressing room and throw brown packets on the table, no extras no win simple ,no mega contracts those days. HAPPY DAYS EH!
