Nehemiah Turton
Started by: john m (6) Report abuse
Bentlegs and Frances, just came across your conversation about Nehemiah, Handel and Rossini. I am Nehemiah's great-nephew. His sister Polly (Corbett) was my grandmother. I remember my mother Doreen Moses (nee Corbett) telling me about Handel and Rossini but can't remember the exact family connection to Nehemiah.

Frances, Wow! I did not know until now that Lily Turton was my grandmother's cousin, not sister. Thank you for the thread. I remember Agnes and Ida on Wigan Road. As you were looking for Canadian connections, I remember we had an "Uncle Tom" in Canada in the 60's - not sure what the precise connection was.

I still have the family bible of Jonathan Turton (b AUg 31, 1844) in which they recorded their marriage birth dates of children. For anyone who is interested...

Jonathan and Mary Ann Findlay (? hard to read certificate) were married June 9, 1864. They had many children:-

Jane b. March 26 1868
John (b Dec 29, 1869 - may have been registered in 1870?
Jonathan Oct 3, 1872
Elizabeth Nov 19, 1874
Thomas Nov 4 1876
Nehemiah Oct 21 1883 - deceased Sept 14 1880)
Louisa Aug 16 1881
Nehemiah Oct 21 1883
Ethel Nov 14 1886
Alan March 3 1889
Polly April 6 1892

The Nehemiah, born in 1909 of Bryn Road may be the son of John Turton above. I remember visiting, as a child in the 60's, a "Miah" who lived very close to Pretoria Road, Ashton. If Bryn Road is close to Pretoria Road - that would make sense?

Hello John

Your great great grandfather Thomas Findlow 1825, who came from Stone, Staffordshire, and great great grandmother Elizabeth Moody 1819 who came from Mirfield, Yorkshire are also my direct descendants. (Polly Turton's grandparents)

Makes us 3rd cousins once removed, so not closely related but a direct line is the same.

Hello cousin. This is amazing to me. 24 hours ago on a whim I googled Nehemiah Turton and now I have all this family history. Thank you!

Frank, if you talk to Les again please tell him know that I met Miah when I was a child in the sixties. I think we walked frpm Pretoria Road but can't be sure. I will always remember the visit because he had a 45 RPM record player and told us that we (my sister and I) could come over and play our pop records any time. :) :)

Hi John M, Bentlegs and Francis.
I am related to John M, through my mother Dorothy FRANKLIN who is the daughter of Lilian Turton. Lilian is the daughter of Louisa TURTON and related to Poly Turton and Doreen CORBETT. I am currently tracing my family history and would love to get in touch with John and find out more about the Turton Family. My mother Dorothy and father Gordon (Roberts) remember visiting the area and can recall Pretoria Road but not much more. Any help would be appreciated and especially if John gets in touch.
