Lythgoe

Does anyone recall a Mayor of Wigan Known as Thomas Richard Lythgoe? He was married to one of my ancesters and was The Mayor of Wigan for a period of time, i am going back on about 1950's. Does anyone recall this? I am visiting Wigan next week to further my studies and wondered if anyone had any information?

Hello Krystal

There are photographs all over the town hall corridors of previous Mayors. I don't know whether you would be allowed in during your visit to town.

Certainly worth asking.

No Krystal, unfortunately I think the archives are kept in Leigh town hall.

I've just remembered that all the Mayors of the town, going back to when Adam was a lad, are named on bronze plaques around the walls in the Town Hall (Wigan) atrium. This is a place where weddings are done and other public functions. So at a guess, I'd say that you could pretty much be able to go in without too much fuss between ceremonies.

The Town Hall is a former college and the elaborate main door and steps are used by wedding parties as they leave. They enter via the ground floor reception area and are led upstairs. You can't just walk in and freely wander round.

Perhaps you could ring them in advance.

EDIT

Archives at Leigh Town Hall.

Thomas R Lythgoe was Mayor from May 1952 until May 1953. I may have a photograph of him?

Hi wiganyankeeron,
Do you really? Would it be possible for me to have a look or copy? Do you now much about him, I knew his was mayor he was married to my greatgrandfathers sister, Bessie Prescott. As much as i can gather his family owned/run the pub Black Swan at Scholes? But between 1901 and 1911 it looks like his father either died or was divorced and his mothers new husband took over the pub?

Hi Krystal I have some old Wigan Almanacs. The photo of the mayor was usually on the first page. I'll have a look to see if I have one for 1952/53. If I don't? no doubt the History Shop will have a copy. I think it re-opens just after Easter.

Hi Krystal - I worked with Councillor Thomas Lythgoe from 1959 to 1961 at the North Western Electricity Board offices in Chapel lane, Wigan. He was a bit of a joker and once sent me to the local bookies to place a bet for him - a double to win on Shy Talk and Alf Hart. I was a lamb to the slaughter much to the amusement of the bookie and clients! I think he had a son Ralph who worked for Wigan Corporation Parks Dept. They lived in Vaughan St. in Scholes. He was on the street lighting committee when I worked with him and I think had already served as mayor. Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Krystal. I used to operate from Leigh Town Hall leading citizenship workshops for primary pupils and can tell you that there are photographs of all the mayors from way back when. You can just walk into the Town Hall as it is a public building, just ask the security persom on duty if they can take you up stairs to look at the roll of honour of the Wigan Mayors. Good luck with your quest!

Hi Krystal. I must thank you too because your posting spurred me on to join - I had been meaning to for ages. Yes I thought Owd Lygo (as his colleagues called him) was a nice man. I was only 19 and the office junior at the time and he always treated me with respect, but as I said, he was a joker. He wrote a reference for me which I still have somewhere - I will have a good look for it - his signature is on it obviously, so that might interest you. His job was to process time sheets and deal with sick notes. Probably other things as well but its a long time ago and it seemed rather boring to me at the time. Next time you come, get in touch with me via WW and I will try and get a copy of his signature to you. Good luck with you research.

I knew Ralph Lythgoe who worked for Wigan Parks dept
He would now be about 77 years old

He was a tractor driver at Haigh Hall, then went to be in charge at Gidlow cemetery
I was a gravedigger there for a short while, that would be mid 60s
I remember that he sometimes mentioned problems that local folk took to his dad who was a local councillor

Last I heard Ralph was living up Whelley near the 'Plantation Gates'

There is only one person I know that might have the latest on Ralph

If I see him in the next couple of weeks I will ask

Just by coincidence I met someone from Whelley recently and I mentioned RL -- the chap knew of a Ralph Lythgoe, same area but not the same one

krystal,
only just picked up this thread, an aspect of your search might want to research the 'Lythgoe Cup' a trophy awarded to the winners of inter school football competition.
If you go to photographs ,schools, and say Thomas Linacre you will see a picture of winners

I worked with Ralph at Wigan Parks dept until 1964
Saw him a few times after that. Not sure if he had any children or brothers/sisters

Quite a popular chap; liked a pint in those days and loved fishing, especially Pike fishing in the Scottish lochs

Back in the day his favourite pub was Crawford Arms at Red Rock near Wigan where I sometimes met him

Ask the mods for my email address for further info
