Big thank you, mygriffiths! You can always be relied upon. I don't know why I couldn't find the baptism with the names of the parents last night. I looked on familysearch and I have an ancestry subscription. Perhaps it was too late and I was too bleary-eyed. I have just put in William Baldwin's name, the date and Hampshire on familysearch and it came up immediately. Strange! But I'm very grateful to you.

P.S. I expect father John was a "sawyer" , not a lawyer.

I had wondered about that but William had the same job on the 1861 census
Name: William Baldwin

Estimated birth year: abt 1814

Spouse's Name: Catharine Baldwin
Gender: Male
Where born: Preston Candover, Hampshire, England

Hopefully the person you are helping has some knowledge about William.

I think William was also a sawyer. I suspect the person I am helping has no knowledge of William at all. Her knowledge stopped at his daughter Caroline, who was her ancestor. William is living in Birkenhead in 1851, where his birthplace is given as Preston! His wife and eldest daughter were supposedly born in Hants, Lancashire (!!). "Preston" threw me for a couple of days, but then I managed to trace William and his wife to Hampshire. After that push from you, I have now traced the line back to Olive's birth and her parents William Lamboll and Elizabeth Simpson. So, I'm pleased about that.
The Catharine above is possibly William's second wife, but I haven't found a marriage - not that I looked very far. He may just have been living with Catharine. His first wife Emily (from Hampshire) died in Birkenhead in 1852. The Harriet in the 1861 census is her daughter.
Thanks a lot again.

Thanks, mygriffiths!
I suspected that Catherine's maiden name was probably Davies due to the lodger in 1861, but I didn't have the time to go through the William Baldwins who married Catherines between 1852 and 1861 and then to check the surnames of these to see whether a Catherine Davies had married a man with that surname. Should have done, I know!
If you are bored, you might be able to help with something else. William and Emily Baldwin are living in Birkenhead in 1851 with the children Emma, Caroline, Charles, Harriet and Mary. There had also been a child called William, who died in 1848. I know who Emma married. I know a lot about Caroline (married John Seddon and moved to Aspull). Harriet was a bit difficult. Her birth is registered as "Priscilla", she married as "Harriet Priscilla" and is in the censuses as "Harriet", but she is now sorted. I think Mary died aged 2.
But what happened to Charles?? I thought he would be easy as he was born in France (as was Caroline), but I can find no Charles Baldwin after 1851 who was born in France. I can't find an early death. Nor can I seem to find a marriage that fits. Of course, there are many Charles Baldwins in the censuses and he may have given the wrong place of birth. Or he may have emigrated. Anyway any ideas??

That could very well be him, in fact probably is. He was born 1845/46. Have now seen this on ancestry and on Cheshire BMD, but nothing suitable came up when I looked on ancestry before. Really, really strange. Big thank you again! I'll sent the info about William's second marriage and Charles' early death to the person in New Zealand.
