Trying to trace James Aspey family
Started by: lanky11 (4086)   Report abuse
James Aspey married Elizabeth Rigby in 1913 Registry Office or Registrar Attended Wigan.

WE lived next door to a big Aspey family. they were at 261 Billinge Road pemberton in the 50's but I can't remember any Christian names

Posted by: kath arkwright (63) Report abuse
James Aspey and his wife Elizabeth children lived at 12 Holt St from at least 1918 until he died there in 1936.
Apart from Alice who was born Wigan Road and baptised at St Peter's Hindley, all other children were born at !2 Holt St and baptised at St James Poolstock. The two Margarets, Mary Elizabeth and John James all died at the same address.
They must have moved back to Wigan Road between 1936 and 1838 as Alfred died at 3 Wigan Road in 1938 and is buried with his father in Hindley Cemetery.
When Henrietta and Edith Emily get married at St Peter's Hindley in 1941 and 1945 they are of 3 Wigan Road.
There are no surviving soldier's documents for James Aspey other than one living in Glossop but there are a few named in the Medal Rolls including one in the Manchester Regiment.

Thank you so much Kath. This is the right family What you have found out is more than I could find. Grandma must have moved back to Wigan rd Hindley when her husband died she married John woods and buried him in family grave she died later. I know she was living in Wigan rd then but do not know where she was buried as that grave was full. I started this when my brother sent me a pic of an army guy from WW1 I remember being hung in my mams house I tried to trace the uniform.
I put the picture up on the album WW it just says my grand dad about 4 pages back on there.
If it is not my grand dad I wonder why my mother had it
If you could look at the pic it looks like WW1 uniform is there any way you can find out if it was another family member She was a rigby before aspey If it was from my dads side it would be Edwards or bishup they lived In 89 Nicol rd Bryn Thank you every one for your help with this hugs

I forgot to say that my Grandma owned both 3 and 5 Wigan rd Hindley. and I think her family before that So I think that is why she moved back there. I remember going to a funeral There when I was 7, and I think it could have been my mam grand dad or her brother, that would be 61 years ago I remember he was in a coffin in front room and he was old to me where would they have buried the children that died
Thanks again hugs

I checked out his brother John and found that he was in WW1 but is not the man on the pic. I looked at all the ages of the rest of the family and I could see no other family member that could match the pic, so I now think that the man on the pic is indeed my grandad James Aspey. I was told that some records where destroyed by fire

My Great Grandad was called James Aspey, when he died he lived in Beach Hill and i think he died in 1988, his wife died a few years before that, and her name was Edna. I was only young but i remember going to the funeral. They had 4 children I recall Lillian, Nelly, John, and im not sure of the other ones name. Nelly's husband Graham Joynt co-owned Entwistle and Joynt, any relation?

Marlp: can you tell me some names? I have a photo of my brother with a little girl called Dorothy. We wondered if she was an Aspey from next door. I remember a big family and mum used to talk about Mrs aspey having a fish shop in her front room. I remember Mr Aspey used to keep hens too

I know very little about the Aspey family.

They must have moved back to Wigan Road between 1936 and 1838 as Alfred died at 3 Wigan Road in 1938 and is buried with his father in Hindley Cemetery. I know now that John was in ww1 if you mean before this time I can try and find out.

James Aspey son of Joseph and Eliza is not your ancestor!
He married Margaret Croft at St John's Pemberton 16 April 1910 and he was a French Polisher. In 1911 he's living in Glossop and his war records show him in Glossop and he died there June Q 1958 72y.
I've just come back from holiday and when I've got rid of all the laundry and post will eliminate some more James Aspeys for you.... watch this space!

Thank you very much I really wont to find out something about him as I never got to meet him I guess he was born in 1884. Some where as he died in 1936 but I can not find him any where so far except Holt st, and I know he died there and my Mother was married to my dad from there. Alice Aspey her name after that was Edwards. I think my mother must have been born in Hindley once again any thing you can find will be very welcome I am very thankful for your help

My father was the landlord of the Bird I'th Hand, Hindley, so for a number of years I lived close to the Aspey's house, they also had an adjoining ironmongers type shop (both demolished )

The family was: William (Bill) Rigby the father. Elizabeth (Beth) Aspey his daughter. James Aspey her husband. Kenney Aspey there son. And also Bert - - I can't remember weather Bert was Aspey or Rigby.
When James Aspey died, Elizabeth married a Robert Lewis who lived in a street just behind St Peter's Church, Hindley.

I would estimate Kenny's dob C1935. He was employed by the Glass Works at Platt Bridge. He married C1960 and went to live in one of the terraced houses in Danes Ave, Hindley.

Bert was disabled I think from birth and was always in a wheelchair, he would often be seen sitting outside the front door chatting to passers by.

Bill Rigby was a type of machanical contractor with a workshop behind his house, over previous years he had gained a wide reputation of being a skillful tradesman and was often sent for from one of a number of the mills that existeed in the surounding area at that time, and particularly for the more urgent or difficult jobs.

Wigan Leasure and Culture Trust periodicaly produce a social history magazine titled PAST FORWARD it can be obtained at all Wigan library's and can also be viewed on-line. If you go to Issue 46 and click on page 24 you will see an article submitted in 2007 by Mr Austin Lyons titled “Billy Rigby's Magic”. I think you will find it interesting.

Burt was my uncle. They did call my grandma Beth, and I know she liked to go to the bird to drink. I knew they did own houses and next door there was a barber shop. I know the man who worked there was Johnny and he would shave Burt and lift him into his bed and get him up in the morning With a lifter. I think Grandma owned that shop too but at one time There was also scrap metel yard behind the houses. I know my grandma also married John Wood he died too or John Woods not sure about this but I think she might have married again I seem to remember in her late years 70s but I do not remember his name I think he died too then she died. I think I remember her last wedding was in the news paper something like here comes the bide in 1975 or at 75 When she was living where with Jackie wood there was an older man there too I think it was Grandmas brother. Thank you so much I will now go and check out this info and get back to you please keep posting Amedar and thank you very much for this infoI think Billy was my grandmas Dad

lanky 11, Very nice photos, they bring back happy memories of days in a wonderful community.

If you go to the Photo Album - Places - and then Hindley, the 8th picture along is one of St Peter's Church in the background, and Wigan Rd in the forground. Just to the left of the arched shaped entry in the property on the right hand side on the photo is Bill Rigby's shop No 5 before it was converted to become “Jonnies” the barbers. To the left of the shop is the white front door of the family home No3.

Posted by: kath arkwright (63) Report abuse
These are the James Aspey births registered in the Wigan area during the period when your James Aspey would have been born.

1 1883 James son of Mary Aspey who married Robert Barlow in 1887 and Edward Fishlock in 1910. This James Aspey sometimes known as James Barlow married Mary Ellen Yates in 1912 at St Marks.

2 1883 James mother Baron, which makes him the son of Thomas Aspey and Alice Baron. This James Aspey is with his parents in Shevington. In 1911 he and his father are at 23 Broad o'th Lane but listed as Ashey! Thomas died in 1914 and left a will. The first James born to Thomas and Alice in 1868 was buried at Standish in 1868 a RC of Shevington.

3 1885 James mother Ashall, which makes him the son of William Aspey and Jane Ashall married 1876. This James died a few months old.

4 1885 James mother Halliwell, making him the son of John Aspey and Ellen Halliwell, married 1878.They lived at Vitriol Fold and in 1910 this James Aspey married Annie King at St George's Wigan. In 1911 he is living in Martland Mill Lane with his brother Richard.

5 1885 James mother Johnson making him the son of John Aspey and Nancy Johnson married 1871. This James Aspey is still living at the family home 30 Duke St Pemberton/Goose Green in 1911.

6 1886 and this is the James Aspey previously accounted for who went to live in Glossop.

So it appears that your James is either son of Thomas and Alice Baron or John and Nancy Halliwell. With the marriage to Elizabeth Rigby hidden away in the Register Office, in order to be accurate in your research you will have to buy the certificate!

Do you know the person Butz65 on Ancestry who has your photo of James Aspey claiming that he is the son of John and Nancy but offering no proof! Do not go down the rocky road of latching on to faulty information which so many people do on Ancestry. The golden rule of good genealogical research is PROVE IT!

Start a new query about William Rigby and his wife Margaret. I can't tell you what happened to her but I can tell you where she came from!

Thank you very very much Kath you are great I do know Butz6 you see I come from Bryn there is a Bryn thread on facebook I put the pic on there to find out what war he might have been in and he offered to do it on his Ancrsery So he did use the pic. The reason I asked on here is that it did not seem right to me but could be right nor did the Rigby part seem right for great grandad how ever on my dad's side he did also Edwards he did get that right but I am thankful for all help. I know he was just trying to help.
The reason I started asking is my youngest brother Norman Edwards started it there in Wigan but passed away before it was completed he did get a lot of info from my dads side and it lined up with what Buz6 found I know my family was Church of England My brother John who lives in Wigan sent me all the old pics and I know I had seen this pic of grandad in the attic it was a big pic My brother Jimmy must have take a pic of it from the one in the attic. My brother Jimmy died and I guess the pictures where given to Norman when he died my brother John got them This Christmas he sent me all the pics on a disk so when I saw the pic I wonted to find out more I knew his name was James
The William Rigby thing I am just guessing on his wife's name but I know what I have read in this thread lines up with what I remember as a child .I wish I could do it myself but I am on a fix income now I am retired I am very greatful for the time you have spent doing this and for the other poster's too
I did know my great grandad for a few years I think I was 7 when he died Thanks again

When I said your James was either the son of Thomas Aspey and Alice Baron or John and Nancy, it should have said Johnson. I obviously had Aspey fatigue but if you read the list James 4 is married and James son of John and Nancy is not!

My brother John went to Hindley grave yard and found all the graves of my mams family. Her mother dad kids great grandad. My grandad is the back and white pic in uniform. We never did find out his Army history. Except where he lived while alive. His name was James Aspey.

I now know that the picture of the man in uniform is not James Aspey my mam's dad He was my dad's dad Charles Edwards from Nicol road Bryn. You need to scroll up to see the picture.
