Vivienne Roughley
Started by: wiganyankeeron (2229) Report abuse
Looking at the old photos of Upholland, just uploaded to the site. There is one showing Stairey Brow The house at the top is where an old girl friend of mine lived. I think she evetually married a guy from Hindley who had a cake shop/bakers shop in Hindley? I remember he had a grey streak in his hair even though he was only in his twenties. Does anyone know the shop or Vivienne. Just wonderd how her life panned out?

Greetings from New Zealand !!

I was born and brought up in UpHolland. I still have several relatives and friends there. They may be able to answer your question.

Can you tell me where in UpHolland Stairey Brow is (I know UpHolland very well, but can't remember Stairey Brow.

There are several Roughley families in UpHolland, do you know the names of any other members of her family ?

Hi Stairey Brow is now just a flight of steps leading to Back Brow, which comes out into Alma Hill ,just below the Old Dog. There was only two houses in Back Brow in the 1960's, but I think that now they have been knocked into one house? Vivienne lived in the top house. She had two sisters Vera and Pam. I saw Pam a few years ago, she was working in the 'LADS' shoe shop in Market Street. Vivienne would be about 59ish now and Pam was a couple of years younger.

Her sister, Pam( don't know her married name) lived on Warrington Road Newtown, in a terraced house, near Rathbones Bakery, until her husband died about 10 years? ago. Perhaps someone knows her by her married name? She was a big girl, with dark hair and wore glasses.

I will contact a couple of people I know who live very close to 'Stairey Brow' (now that I know where you are talking about)
I went to school with the 'boy' who lived in the little sweet shop that was between the 'Old Dog' or 'Owd Dog' as it was called.
He would be 60ish now and lived there in the late 50s early 60s.

I don't think that anyone living there now would know where she lives as I am going back now 40 years. I remember her cousin Albert lived in the house next door with his mother. It's no big deal, Looking at the photograph just reminded me of her Just wondered what happend to her?.

I am positive I have just seen Pam, her sister, walking up Warrington Road. Just higher up than the dentist near Rathbones. If anyone lives in that row, perhaps they will know her? Don't know her married name

Just found out Vivien's sisters married name is Pam Birchall and she lives in Warrington Rd. Newtown. Does anyone know her?

Posted by: dennis dickinson (478) Report abuse
wiganyankeeron - You mention 'her cousin Albert' - would he be approx 67 years of age now ?
I have a cousin who has lived within 500 yards of 'Stairey Brow' for the past 58 years - so I think she may know 'something' !

Posted by: wiganyankeeron (2229) Report abuse
Hi Denis yes he would be about that age. He lived next door I think both houses have since been knocked into one?

Posted by: dennis dickinson (478) Report abuse
wiganyankeeron - I went to school with Albert - was his surname 'Glover' - (it's 50 years ago) - he was a 'large' boy, he was also the Head Boy at Billinge & UpHolland Secondary School.
I think that the pub next door to where they lived "Owd Dog" has been demolished / converted into a house / flats.
50 years ago, I think that where Albert lived was a little shop.

Looking at the photographs of Alma Hill etc - things have changed a lot since I 'wur' a lad.
Alma Hill used to be all cobblestones - when you went down Alma Hill at the bottom was a cobblestone lane that went off to the left - it went down to Church Street. That is now where the steps are.

Posted by: wiganyankeeron (2229) Report abuse
Hi Denis yes that was his surname. He was Vivien's cousin i.e. his mother and and Vivien's mother were sisters. Wonder what happened to him?

Posted by: dennis dickinson (478) Report abuse
wiganyankeeron - last month I was communicating with two 'boys' that I went to school with, one now lives in Billinge, the other lives in Appley Bridge. Alberts name was mentioned and neither of them had seen or heard from Albert since school days - 50 years ago.
I will ask my cousin, who has lived near Alma Hill for nearly 60 years - she might be able to shed some light on his whereabouts etc.

Dennis the old dog has not been knock down just converted.
I have lived in and around upholland all my life and dont remember a sweet shop next to thee old dog.
There was a sweet shop on the opposite side to the old dog on the right hand side.
By the cobbled steps that lead up to alma hill estate and are still there today.

Posted by: dennis dickinson (478) Report abuse
noddy2 - I'm not sure how old you are - but I was born in 1945 (left the U.K. in 1967) - I remember going down Alma Hill on the left hand side was the farm - a little lower down was the UpHolland Council Offices - then the 'Owd Dog' - next door was a large house which part of it was a sweet shop.
A 'boy' that I went to school with lived there 'Albert Glover' - Albert went to Billinge & UpHolland Secondary School 1957 - 1960.
After the 'shop' you could turn left and go down a narrow cobblestoned lane which had a couple of cottages on the left hand side - that lane came out onto the main road.
Does what i've written make sense ?
Can I ask what year you were born ? and what part of UpHolland are you from ?

Posted by: wiganyankeeron (2229) Report abuse
Vivien Roughley lived in the first house in Back Brow which was the old Post Office (see photograph in ALBUM) Albert Glover was her cousin and lived in the house next door. I can't believe all the people who have posted, who lived in that area, don't know her or the family????? I have recently found out she was married in Southport. So the information I had about her marrying someone from Hindley appears to be incorrect

Posted by: glenysa5 (4) Report abuse
Is the sweet shop mentioned not Marys Winstanleys or Mary Lees as we called it sold everything including sweets. The shop at the bottom of the cobbled steps was everything from a grocers watch repair shop hairdressers even a travel agents .

Posted by: noddy2 (167) Report abuse
