Gidlow Secondry Modern 1960-1966?

Started by: latics77 (289)

Hi,I'm posting on behalf of my mum, Josephine Holmes, now Josephine Hart, who went to Gidlow Secondry Modern around 1960-1966.

Is there anyone who went to this school around the same time, my mums brothers were Brian and John Holmes.

My mum went to watch the Beatles in Wigan with friends from this school, does anyone recall this, they were warned not to queue for tickets in school time. One friend who went was named Susan Roper?

Looking forward to any replies.

PS, my mum also worked at John Englands between 1966-1976.

At the time one of her frends was Rita McCardle(sp).

My mum started as a filling girl, then a checker.

I went to Gidlow during that time, but I'm afraid I don't remember your mum's name. However, I do remember a girl called Susan Roper.

Ask her if she remembers Shirley Porter, Hazel Lowe, Susan Dickinson, Valerie Nelson, Denise Roby. There were quite a few others in our class, but we had no Josephine. What age is she now?

Hi, my mum is 59, she was a member of the swimming team.

She remembers some of the names mentioned above, Malcolm Roper, Shirlry Porter etc. She is trying to remember who the Head Girl was at the time.

Maybe you were a year above/below her?

I am also 59 years old, so we would have been in the same year, but not the same class. I'll be darned if I can remember the Head Girl's name. Christine summat, I think! I was in Class 4A, but there was 4B and 4C as well. Ask her if she remembers Janice Williams. I am still in touch with Janice and Shirley. Does she remember Kathleen Heywood? All three were/are good friends of mine. I knew Shirley, Hazel and Kathleen from being 3 years old, and there was also Susan Dickinson, when we started going to Warrington Lane Nursery, then Infants, then we all went to Gidlow and all were in the same classes throughout. We've all known each other for about 57 years. We met Janice at Gidlow and have been in contact ever since.

Hi Kameras (John). I will ask my brother if he remembers you. Forgive me, but I'm not prepared to put his name, or mine, on the internet, as we value our privacy, but I will let you know what he recalls of those times.

Hi Jennifer. I remember you from Gidlow, although you won't remember me. I recall Mrs Lowe putting you on the stage in the hall and telling us all that Jennifer Kingham was emigrating with her family to Australia. I recall that very clearly and I thought it was very exciting back then. I remember you had long dark wavy hair.

Dear Mollie M
With regards to your post
"Ask her if she remembers Shirley Porter, Hazel Lowe, Susan Dickinson, Valerie Nelson, Denise Roby. There were quite a few others in our class, but we had no Josephine. What age is she now?"
I do remember all of them as I think that I was in your class as well. I was Jean Holleron. It was Christine Jukes who became the head girl. I still keep in touch with Denise Roby.
Regards Jean

Hi Jean

Of course I remember you and yes, Christine Jukes was head girl.

Nice to hear from you again after about 50+ years.

If you'd like a catch-up you could email me by asking Admin to contact me who will then give me your email address. It would be nice to have a natter after all this time. Only if you want to, though.

Take care,
Mollie

It is true what kameras typed. With such sadness, I have to say that most of the Gidlow teachers of the 1960s are no longer with us.
