Wigan Fire Station, GOING??

You best get you last snaps of Wigan Comunity Fire Station in soon as it is rumored to be getting demolished and rebuilt on the same site by 2014.
It will be a shame, it is such a lovely looking building

Yet another modern building made to last(think not)Only Wigan planners would put a fire station at the most congested junctions around Wigan. If it is to be knocked down rebuild it elsewhere

Found out it is likely to be nearer April 2014 when they are likely to start bringing it down.
They have to wait till Rochdale's new station is completed.
With regards to its location, is GMC Fire & Rescue Service who consider this to be the best location due to its easy access in all directions for the area it serves.

JM I think they can control the traffic lights in an emergency.

Geoffrey Shryhane on Twitter - @WiganWorldGeoff (21/4/14):
"Wigan's to have a new fire station, rising on the site of the present building."
I haven't been able to find out any more as yet, just wondering where the Wigan fire fighters will be based in the meantime.

what's wrong with the one they've got,it's not that old.

There is an 'escape' road built into the Saddle Junction, so that fire engines can turn right out of the station and proceed along Warrigton Road, Ormdkirk Road etc without having to go around the gyratory, if you look at the road layout you can see where it is

This post brings back a few memories - I was a volunteer fireman back in the early 1960s.
We had the old 'green goddess' fire engine. We used to meet for practice one night per week at the fire station.
If there was a 999 fire call come in while we were in the station, we had to wait for the regular firemen to go down the pole before us, by the time we got down the pole and onto the 'Green Goddess' the red fire engines had disappeared, but we chased them, clanging the bell with a piece of rope that came through the roof.
Inevitably, the fire was out by the time we got there - Happy Memories :)

Carol gr - I don't know exactly when it was built, but it was 'newish' when I was a volunteer there in the early 1960s.

I have just 'googled' Wigan Fire Station, it opened in 1961.

January 2016 - M.E.N.:
A new £4m fire & ambulance station is set to be built. Building work is planned to begin next year.
The station will replace the existing fire station in Robin Park Road in the centre of Wigan and will see crews and paramedics come together under one roof.

Where's it going to be then? The Galleries? The Market Hall?

They can't build a fire station on Rodney street car park because they don't own the land.

Shared blue light hubs will be new trend - Wigan Today (2/2/16):
'Wigan borough will be served by a purpose-built fire engine and ambulance hub on the site of the current fire station on Robin Park.'

Why do you think Wigan council keep telling people to 'BELIEVE' ?
They want you all as daft as they are!
Replied: 2nd Feb 2016 at 22:56

To put the record straight, the old fire station in Chapel Lane which preceded Robin Park Road was a combined fire and ambulance station. So maybe the idea did originate in Wigan many years ago.

From the Manchester Evening News -
"Emergency services in Salford joined forces in 2014 to work from one location for the first time in Greater Manchester".
So, it looks like Wigan won't even be 'the first' in their own county!
