Smellbang, Mossy lives in Kitt Green and has been a truck driver for over 20 years. I was his neighbour for about 10 years, never changed still daft as a brush. If you look up the photos on this website for Springfield ARFLC there loads of photos of him (some even sober)

Posted by: peter48 (2750)  Report abuse
i remember all those names, graham moss, mick and martin lee are half cousins of mine.
as for andrew mason i remember him from the late 1960s when we wre young uns, if i remember correctly he lived quite close to nellie smith, perhaps in snowden avenue,
bob boardman worked in the machine shop, cant remember which department terry hurley worked and i certainly cant recall any brenda
i worked there from 1964 up to it closing in 1980

Joe McAllister rings a bell - does anyone remember him?

Posted by: lesley (502) Report abuse
Is this the same as Foster-Len who used to sell furniture but I can't remember where the building was?

Posted by: peter48 (2750)  Report abuse
its the same foster -len lesley
when i joined the firm in 1964 it just down chapel lane just over the canal bridge.
the machine shop was on the left hand side and the assembly shop was with the upholstery shop over the road
all the timber was unloaded on the left hand side and this was overseen by jack Roscoe with the help of a chap called roy underwood
it was then cut to size and if necessary was put in a kiln to dry out by a chap called Marshall Hatton
it was then cut to shape and the finoshed product was sent over the road to the assembly shop where it was all glued and put together then off to the spray shop and then to the upholstry shop before being shipped out to where ever
i think in the early 70s we all moved en bloc to the old eckersley mill and i think it was there that we joined up with the Len group from down south, hence aquiring the name Foster - Len
we were taken over by the silent night group before closing in 1980 when most were made redundant except for a few who broke away under mike littlehales and jimmy gibson who carried on making furniture in the eckersley mill
when i joined the firmin 1964 it was ran by old Mr. Foster before his son Kevin took the firm on. I always remeber him walking round in a white coat i cant remember his son Andrew ever being involved in the company

JOHNNYSEVEN, Cheers for the Mossy info. I'll check out the Springfield.

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
Peter48.

What happened to Jimmy Gibson after that? He must be about 70 odd now. Brenda, I'm sure that was her name, was a tall blonde who worked in the upholstery shop. I remember Kenny Jones, Little Johnny who worked with Albert. Clifford, they worked in the Mill. I worked on a machine called the Zuckerman- huge monster of a thing. Bob Doran and Jimmy Summers live in Scoles. Jimmy Hilton was another chap I remember. John Gibson another. Granville- a complete nutter was another. I remember Marshall you mention. He was time and Motions bloke. Do you remember Frank in the tool shop? There was another women Doris, dark hair, great looking.

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
Johnnyseven,

I checked out Springfield. When we knocked about Mossy liked rugby but don't remember him playing that much. Was this in the Ken Gee cup? When I left in the 70s he'd fallen some girl so lost track of him. Love to know what happened to Vince Robinson, Tony Baldwin, Winnie. Remember Coddy? The Stork pub as well. Terry Hurley knew all the above. Surprised Mossy lives in Kitt Green. He used to live just down the road behind what was then known as the Top Shops. Passed Precious Blood church- going back now, passed the Stork, at the very bottom would be the bottom shops. After getting pissed in the Stork a whole gang of us would go to the bottom chippie. Great memories. What happened the Martin Lee? I remember Mick had a bad leg, and wasn't there another brother John? Then there was Mary his sister if I remember.

No Mossy didn't venture far from his base. I know he went out with a girl from Brabazon Place but he didn't marry her

Thanks Peter. Really shocked to hear Jimmy Gibson died. He gave me my first job from school, my dad knew him. Albert was a great guy. Surprised you do not know little Johnny- he backed up for Albert as well. Clifford worked in the mill with Albert. Jimmy Hilton drives buses? He used to work on a drilling machine, can't remember exact name for it. Do you know what Jimmy Gibson died of Peter? Really brings back memories. He used to work with my dad, that's why he gave me a job at Fosters when I left school. Love to know any more info you might have on the Fosters people.

Thanks again for the Mossy info. I knew him well. Did he marry, have kids do you know? It's really odd looking at the Springfield info you mentioned. Mossy was one of the guys I used to know, along with about 50 others from Wigan.
Seeing him in a photo after so many years- about 35, is really strange. I can still hear the sound of his voice.
I remember there was this hairdresser guy who lived near Kitt Green who Mossy used to hate with a passion. He wanted so much to knock his head off but never got the chance. Thanks for the info. Any more you have love to hear.

Posted by: 1934granada (inactive) Report abuse
I know Mossy well. He is a very good friend of mine. I got to know him 1978 he lived on Scholefield Lane then. He got married early 80's had a son and a daughter but is now divorced and living at Kitt Green. After Fosters he went driving for the GPO and then HGV driving for a company in Cardiff. He then bought a concrete wagon had it a few years and now he is long distance driving transporting chemicals. Many a good time was spent in his company as you will know he is never short of a word or two! He is as sharp as a razor with his wit! He did actually play rugby for Harlequins (Fulham as they were called then) and believe you me he was always quick to point that out to anyone who was prepared to listen He actually appeared in the shoot annual whilst playing at Craven Cottage. I also know Vinnie Robinson very well. He is a very keen runner. Has been for almost 30 years.

Posted by: upthetims (6507) Report abuse

Aye that's Vinnie.and never tasted alcoholic beverage for the same amount of time. He's a better mon than me,Gunga Din

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
1934granada

Vinnie a runner???? Jesus!! I knew Mossy very well. He didn't pay much attention to playing when I knew him. He liked rugby but not the playing side. He met this girl when I knew him at Foster's and he went a bit funny, wouldn't talk about her or anything- he was well in love.
After that all our mates split up. Vinnie Robinson met a blonde bird. Then I was told he was he'd been certified an alcoholic- don't know if this is true or not. Vinnie when we were lads got shot in the lip. Has he still got a blue lip? He worked with a guy named Coddy. His favourite drink was Black Velvet. Did Vinnie marry? Does he have kids? Mossy and Vinnie will be the same age as me 56. Vinnie's best mate was a guy named Winnie. Really shocked that Vinnie is now a runner. Its not the Vinnie I remember. Vinnie could down 3 pints to our 1. Anyone know where Vinnie lives? Mossy would know as he was in our mob, along with about 50 others. Thanks for the info. Love to know what happened to Vinnie, he was a great mate of mine. Love to get in touch with him again. Million memories.

Posted by: upthetims (6507) Report abuse

I've just tellt yo,Vinnie has not had a drink for thirty years,be towd!

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
Must be a different Vinnie Robinson. Tell me, has this Vinnie got a scar on his top lip? If he hasn't then its a different Vinnie. Vinnie was shot in the lip with an air gun. If it's the same Vinnie then something drastic must have happened. Vinnie used to live just up the road from the Stork pub. He played 3 card brag there. Does he still live in Marsh Green?

Posted by: jem glover (1934)  Report abuse
Vinnie is the same lad you remember,he was the best mate of Bri Wood both work at Bulldog. Not sure if they are both there now as I've not seen them in years. But Vinnie in early 80's saw the light if you know what I mean (stopped drinking)took up running and the rest is history. So same Vinny but he's changed from the lad you new in the 70's.Then he would gamble on ow't,saw him once playing pitch and toss outside Wigan Riverside Club for a few quid in the early eighty's just before he changed into the tea total running Man he is today.

Posted by: paddygriffin (41) Report abuse
Vinnie still does loads of running most of it long distance. He is one of my other halfs mates and is really still in to watching the Rugby, but most of the time he tends to take his grandson. He did marry the girl with the blonde hair but they whre divorced years ago,and he as one girl around thirty.HE has not had a drink for years ,lives with there Brian his brother in Kitt Green and still works at Bulldog Tools. Next time I see him or the other half does I will let him know somone is asking about him.

jem glover/ paddygriffin

Cheers guys, much appreciated. Must say this news shocked me to my boots!! I mean BIG TIME!! Did he find God or something? And running??? Vinny was never a runner. He was an amazing gymnast- I mean top dog. He used to get 10 out of 10 at school- Tommy More. He also used to do short arms (kind of long somersault) over the Stork Pub wall. He was a great diver at the swimming pool. If he lives in Kitt Green- (I remember Brian as well, but he was a young lad) then he must live near Graham Moss- Mossy. We all used to knock around together. Everyone seems to have changed to what I knew 'em. Thanks again for the info. He had a blonde girlfriend going back God 30 years. Wonder if he married her? Can't get over that Vinnie is now tee total and running. Would you believe it!! Must try and catch up with him one day- got to find out what happened. Cheers Guys, Thanks for the info. If I met Vinnie again I would have said let's go and get drunk. So that's out the window then. Gob Smacked!!

My you've got a good memory. Didn't the whole family of the Burrows work there? He drove the vans didn't he? Maybe not. Is Mick Lee still fit and well and he brother Martin? He had another brother as well John I think. There was also Mary. Do you remember Bob Boardman? Then there was old Harry in the drawing shop, they made the jigs.
Also Bill in the upholstery shop, very sharp and funny. I also remember a guy named Eric Dutson. Alan Halliwell I also remember, he had a brother who was the engineer there as well. You must remember Dorothy? Bill from upholstery was always winding her up. Great looking lass with fantastic legs. Dark candyfloss hair style.

Hi carl
I remember all those names you have said, all the burrows did work there, albert was in the machine shop whilst Raymond was in the upholstery shop and raymonds wife worked with the sewers.
I think the other burrows was ken burrows who worked in the garage loading up the vans with trevor and joyce Windsor and marie (Ken burrows wife Ruby also worked in the sewing shop)
Mick and martin lee are still knocking about, they are half cousins to me.
bill from the upholstery shop could have been Bill molynuex
The only Dorothy I can bring to mind is Dorothy melling who also worked in the garage, she married teddy mellings brother.
You are right about harry hill who worked in the pattern shop along with frank Irwin who sharpened the saws and a chap called Dick who made the jigs.
Other names that spring to mind are
Machine shop.
Albert burrows, teddy melling Clifford finch, bob Boardman, george grundy, bob doran, kenny jones, nellie smith, mick smith andrew mason, marshall hatton alan halliwell, jimmy gibson

I can see the faces of so many more but cant put names to them yet, but I will,
there are so many tales of the place i could tell you, if only i could remember them all.
i cant picture you though carl?

Hi Peter, I only worked there for seven years. I was a dreadful machinist, completely useless!!. I remember a lot of the people you mention but your memory is uncanny! I cut myself so many times I'm surprised I didn't lose my head. But saying that most of the blokes in the machine shop had lost fingers or something. I remember an incident where a row of drills came down on a chaps arm. Made a terrible mess of his arm as you can imagine. Another lad shaped his thumb the same as the job he was doing. Marshall Hatton was the time and motion chap when I was there. He took loads of stick. Mick Smith was the Shop Steward. I think Mick Lee was the Shop Steward for his section. Not sure who was SS in the Assembly Shop. When I started our canteen was next to the machine shop, then it was above overlooking the front where they used to play football. My first pay cheque was 4.10, take home pay after tax 3. 16 and 7p.

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
God!! When was that? What machine was he on? Never heard that one. Peter, you mention Eric Dutson on your list. He was the one who I mentioned took the drills in the arm. He must have moved departments but it was for sure him. I remember it well. He got loads of money in compensation because there was no guard on the machine or something. He was off works for yonks. Trying to picture Harry Eastham. Peter you also mention Albert. He also had a bad accident when timber backed up on him on a saw machine in the mill (that was what it was called in them days). When there was a bad one word got around pretty fast.

Posted by: peter48 (2750)  Report abuse
It was Harry who had the accident on the drill . The drill had no guard on and it had 3 drills on it

Must be two Eric Dutsons. I worked alongside him loads of times on the sanding machine. I think I would remember unless he was a ghost. I remember Eric had the accident because he paid for his house with the compensation. I remember the machine he was working on in the mill. The job he was working on was a top back rail and he was drilling a series on holes for the dowels that ran down the back of the chair. I remember Eric well as we had loads of arguments about loads of things. He used to go and watch Utd with Mossy. He used to wind me up about the way I played football. I'm a bit surprised Peter that you don't remember little Johnny as he backed up for Albert as long as I remember. Albert's machine was 50 yards from the main mill doors and the machine Eric had his accident was about 10 yards to the left of Albert's machine. Don't remember Harry Eastham as all, must be before or after me.

Posted by: peter48 (2750)  Report abuse
am trying to place this eric dutson you are on about, but having no joy
when my mate harry had his accident we were down at eckersleys mill.
we went there round about 1970ish, when were you at fosters carl?
i`m thinking about when i backed up for alberet we were at chapel lane from 1964 on
i cant recall anybody having an accident in the sawmill like you say happenbed to this dutson fellow, are you sure you got the name right?

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
Eric could have started in a different shop, OR went to work in a different shop, but there was one in the machine shop of this name who had a very serious accident. That's
how I remember the guy. So when I saw his name on your list I immediately recognised it. He had a red car if that is any good. He lived just of a road that if you followed it to the bottom would take you to Kitt Green. He had dark hair and when I was there he would be, let see, a guy aged about 30 or so. I remember the accident well. Not wishing to be too graphic but his shirt sleeves somehow got entangled in the machine and the drills came down on his arm. If I remember it was Albert who came to his aid. This figures as the machine was only yards from Alberts machine. Maybe he worked in other shops after or as well. Maybe orginally he started in other shops and then came to the machine shop. Either way there was an Eric Dutson in the machine shop. Maybe there were two working at Fosters at the time.

Cor Vinny, you've changed- gobsmacked!! Take me hat off to you lad. Did you find God or something? Seems I have to believe what you say. I think the last meet you ran in you can 30th something if I read right. Do you remember Winnie when we both knew him. Did he see the light if you know what mean? I remember going to see a band named GONG in Manchester with him. He was going out with a girl named O'Hara if I remember right- she came too. I didn't know Winnie at all at that do he'd changed so much. If was as if aliens had stolen his brain. I hear you are working at Bulldog Tools. Is that the same place you used to work with Coddy? If so you must have been there about 100 years. I've checked out their site-Bulldog Tools. Must be murder in the summer when its hot. Did you marry Vinny? Do I know her? Any kids? Nice to talk to you again after about 35 years. Really impressed you knocked booze on the head, still can't believe it! When I knew you you could down a pint of Black Velvet in about 5 seconds. What puzzles me is why you never got a job teaching PE. I remember you were the top bod in the gym. You lost me on the Bournemouth girl- its probably true but my brain don't remember. The girl I remember you with was a blonde girl- don't know her name. Saw you once with her in Worsley Hall. Keep shakin it Vinny me old mate.

Someone on here was asking about "Winnie", if thats JW who used to live in Marsh Green and knocked around with KR and Vinny and his crew, well I know he did marry but I think he's divorced now. He has a daughter around 23 and a son who will be around 17 or thereabouts.
Nice to know through WW how everyone is keeping. Have known Vinny for many years but not seen him in ages, one of the nicest guys I've ever met.

THAT'S WHY YOU WILL ALWAYS BE MY MATE VINNY BOY!! What kind of try time was that??? Central Park didn't see better- curtain raiser Wigan/ Saint. --CK ME!! WHAT A MEMORY YOU'VE GOT!! I still remember the applause I got and my bow to the stand. Loved it!! (BIG ED!!) Great memory. Remember Navigation- not Pauline. When I saw you in Worsley Hall with the blonde girl I thought cor she a cracker!! What's she doing with Vinny (joke) Great looking lass though. Sorry it didn't work out. Do you remember a girl named Gillian Heinz? And what was that girl you you were barmy about when we were about 16. Dark haired lass- real stunner. Not Christine Turner another one, short, magic body. You used to go funny everytime you saw her. Can't think of her name. I ended up going with her mate. What was her name. She was the first girl you really fancied big time. Do you remember? Brill talkin to you. How's your brother Brian and your sister Eileen? Hope they are both well. Someone said on this that you live in Kitt Green- that was a posh area in our day. Me and you were down the lower end. Hang in there Vinny.

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
sleepy. Reveal yourself lad!! Who the devil are you? If you know me, Vinny, Winnie, then I'll know you. Love to get it touch with Winnie again. Found Harold, Vinny, love to talk to Winnie again. So many memories. Vinny, do you rememeber when we walked under the M6 bridge at Gathurst? Winnie smoked a fag casually sitting on one of the pillars. Me and you were sh-t--g are selves watching him. There was a big gang of us in Marsh Green so can't think who you are sleepy. Are you in contact with Winnie? Would you mention this forum to him?

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
Jesus, I remember now Vinny- Pauline Lowe- Navigation. Shhhss you've got a memory!! I went with her about two years later. Do you remember at the top of Gathurst Brew we all went to a disco and a guy from Billinge nutted me in the face at the bus stop. We were waiting for a fight but they didn't show until we were getting on the bus. A guy named Tusk was with the other gang. I think it was just me and you who came off worse. The guy gave me a super headbutt in the face. Lovely black eye. Memories flooding back as you can see. Keep in touch.

Does any1 remember the pond we used to call the Desert? Used to go swimming there in summer, think it was in between Porters Wood and Crook village somewhere, just cant place exactly where it was with this ever decreasing grey matter of mine. Carl i think Vinnies girlfriend your thinkin of was Jenny from Norley Hall ave or somewhere around there, and yeah she was a stunner, she still is actually. Spoke to her about 4yrs ago in Spar on City rd.

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
I remember swimming in a pond there as well. My brain box is getting very foggy but it was definitely in that direction. I remember once there was a swans nest on it- huge thing it was. Could well have been called the Desert, rings a bell a bit.

No prob Vin. If you get a email clock it to me. When's your next running meet? I'll pop round to Ladbrokes and get a price for you. Funny how you remember the M6 and the bashing I got. I also remember me and you up there and Tony Baldwin throwing bricks at us. I can still see Winnie as calm as you like smoking a fag sitting on the edge of the second pillar. I'm glad Eileen and Brian are well.
If you see Winnie tell him I've been asking after him. Hope Lisa Marie and Cameron are both doing well. Don't forget to tell him of that try I scored at Central Park (Ha) Keep it touch bud.

Vin, I thought Winnies dad died when we both knew Winnie??
Wasn't he a bus inspector or something? Or was it his mum that died? All I remember as you will was we had nowt in our pockets and Winnie had 30. I was thinking Vin. I left Wigan when I was about 23/24. When did you get married? Dear me what a memory you've got lad!! 14 miles???? I couldn't do one mile. I used to swim every day a few years ago for about 4 years. Just packed it in-couldn't get my breathing right. Did you not marry again once you divorced? You seem mega focused on your running. It must give you something. I've heard it said that if you run often enough you reach a stage where its like floating on a cloud and you can just run and run. Do you get that? Take Care me ole mucka. PS What's Tony Baldwin up to. I'd tell you about Pauline but not on a forum like this (ha)

Some other guys I rememeber: Steve Bailey-Kitt Green. Smoked a fag like it was his last breath. H. What was that hair dressers guys name- Brambles? (surname) or something. Lived near you. One of the first guys to have his hair streaked. Steve Priestly was another, anyone know what happened to him? Kevin, Brian, Christine Gormley, lived in Lincoln Place. Ronnie Dootson, lived opposite the Gormleys. The Griffith's family- lived near Mossy and Tony Baldwin. John Hare lived opposite the Stork. Billy Kenny, lived opposite the field going to Worsley Hall where we played football. Billy Kenny went to Tommy More, same class as me and Vinny. What happened to him. Alan Holden-lived next to the Stork? John White- his dad had greyhounds. John Lynch- lived next to the Stork- fantastic diver at Wigan baths- top stage no problem. Anyone know these guys??

Now, you really are going back, when you was 16/17!!!
I remember you CR and JW in your Afghan coats with your long hair.
Was you 16/17 when you had that getup?
That was around the last time I clocked you. Not been home myself for a while now, but I know the names, who could forget such characters, salt of the earth the Marsh Green people.
The hairdresser you mentioned was Barry Gambles not Brambles, do you remember now? CR, is that the guy you mentioned in an earlier post that Mossy wanted to chin?
The Stork has long since gone I believe, you used to live behind it didn't you CR?
Hope the thread keeps going, I think if people could now register with WW, there would be lots more people commenting.

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
Hi Sleepy. That's it Gambles! Knew it was something like that. Yeah, mossy didn't like him much. Yep! Me and Winnie in Afghan coats, my brilliant hippy days. Just up the road from the Stork I lived. When we moved into Marsh Green they were still building it. Where we lived there was nothing but mud at the front of the house- they hadn't even put grass down.

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
Baz Gambles, was a ladies hairdresser which made him very popular with the birds if I remember.

Posted by: aitch1 (43)  Report abuse
hiya Carl, Baz been married a couple of times. Do you remember when we went to Bournemouth abt 20 of us? Baz met up with us with his bird and that was his 1st marriage. He then married again (some well to do bird)and moved to Southport. Divorced, came back to live in Up Holland and dont know if he married again. He made it big in hairdressing, has a few salons around Wigan. Dont know why Mossy hated him he,s a good bloke really just different from the rest i suppose thats why he made good haha. I remember all the names you come up with, Ronnie Dootson was a coach at st Judes a while ago, but i think he has moved on to a bigger club, think its somethin to do with Warriors although might be wrong there. Another guy i remember was Fred Hamill, lived near you and Dick Roby. Not stopped laughin at the Afghan coats yet hehehehe. I had my purple flares and flared sleeved top with green Budgie jacket with orange collar and pockets.Platforms, beaded necklaces and head bands with my hair nearly touchin my arse, no wonder my dad disowned me hahahaha. Fookin mint times lad

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
You bet H!! I'm glad Baz has done well, good on im. Every body got married but all are now divorced. I moved from Marsh Green to Pem. I came back to Marsh Green years later-people I grew up with, kids in our street had all grown up and were either pregnant or married. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone. They were all still kids in my mind. Really freaked me out. What happened to Steve Priestly H? Weren't you a good mate of his? Maybe wrong. Does Baz not give you a free hair cut? When I moved to London I still spoke like that guy in that film Kes. The London guys I worked with thought I was a savage. They couldn't understand anything I said. I had to tone down my northern accent just to get by. No one could understand a word I said. Folk still ask where I'm from. You don't lose your roots. Believe me guys Londoners think we come from a different planet to them. When I hear the northern accent I try and get chatting to them. I did that in a pub once and they were from Widnes and wanted to give me a bashing when I told them I was from Wigan. Widnes folk bloody hate us.

Her name was Uta Sleightinger or summat like that, cracking looking bird.Spent all night on the beach BBQ the night after with abt 30 Germans. Might have a little Kraut knockin abt somewhere oops! I had a change of plan for us all one night from the Village. I,de seen a cracking night club during the day called Cupboard Love. We all got ready walked miles to it only to find out it was a Kitchen salesroom. Got no stick and jumped on by everyone that night hehehe, never let me forget it all week.

Gillian was Pem H. You'll remember her sister Julie- cracking looking bird.

H, Didn't you go out with Julie Heinz. I thought you did.
Dick Roby knew her well. Maybe it was Goughie. Surprised if you didn't as she was your type- a cracker!! Dick would know, ask him to jog your memory. I had no chance with her. I did go with Hazell Newton once- remember her. Baz Gambles went with her mate at a disco one night in Pem.

Which one was nearer to our age? thats the one i mean. She was a cracker with blond her, must be Julie then. Casino was ruined with them there Londoners wernt it, we used to sneak thru to Mister M,s at the back remember, thought we were dead grown up then hehe. Yeah i remember Pat, she was Doreens best mate. Doreen who married Kev i mentioned earlier. Pat married Andy Cole, they have a chain of car showrooms now A+P Cole f****n minted, millionares i think.

Dear Hip swingin groin thrusting. Yeah Goughie was a magic dancer. My dancing belonged to the complete pratt category.
I was dancing near this black girl in a Newquay club once convinced I'd pulled. At the end of the song she whispered in my ear 'Why don't you just piss off!!' I was so shocked but couldn't stop laughing. I later got nicked by a the coppers for walking down the street with a pint of beer. I got fined 10 for theft of a beer glass. Corr!! Pat Fernley made it big. Good on her. I tried to chat her up once in Wigan Rugby Club, but she also thought I was a twat and blew me out.

Gone mental ere!! Never seen anything like it- Jesus!!!
They're smashing/burning everything. Cops totally outnumbered- 100-1. Nothing compares to this, it's gone bonkers!! Reminds me of the wars you mention H (ha ha)
Take some to scare us Marsh Greeners- even if there are 500 lunatics out there throwing petrol bombs. They just did a whole street about half and hour ago- wrecked the place and set fire to two cars.

Mega Dodgy ere. Gangs of lunatics everywhere. Police look like schoolboys. Get the bloody troops in!! They even ransacked a little ole ladies house, the scumbags!! Whereabouts are you mucka? The scousers kicked off last night in Scumville on Mersey. It,s nowt to do with racism or cut backs, its just scumbags knowing they can get away with it. The cops cant even put a hand on any1 anymore or the pictures will be screened all over the world and they end up in court and sacked with no pension. They should be allowed to kick the fuck out of any1 thats out there. If some1 gets caught up in it tough, get home to the wife n kids, but then again their kids are probly out there doin it.

Middle of it in Clapham and then Ealing. Pure vermin!! This scum would rob their own mothers. Like ...kin animals they were.. They were laughing their heads off carrying telly's, laptops, you name it. They looted a shop in Ealing selling baby clothes- completely wrecked the place. The corner supermarket they robbed and set on fire. They then wrecked the pub next door then ran up the street and did each shop in the street- every single shop. They then ran amok around Ealing Broadway centre. There wasn't a copper in sight for 2 hours- they just did as they pleased. They were laughing their heads off talking on their BB's. Cops could do nothing because they were so outnumbered.

Do you remember a girl named Susan Johnson. Used to live somewhere at the back of Steve Priestly. She was a few years older than us. As a young un I used to fancy that girl like mad. Not sure I think Steve Priestly went off with her. Had problems with Steve Priestly. He steamed in on my first girlfriend when we just broke up. Really cut me up at the time. Thought it was well out of order at the time- you know the first love thing. I got over that by following my mams advice, she said, 'cry over the loss of your dog- but never over a women' If she'd have seen some the dogs I went with (ha ha) Keep shakin it Bud

yeah i remmbr her,she was fit as a butchers dog (see their all dogs when you think of it, just some 1 pinters some 10 pinters hehe)her sister Sandra was our age, was in the same class at Marsh green juniors.I think it was Sandra who Stey copped off with. He was a bit shady wasnt he. Did you used to live next door to the Tierneys? Joe Lock married Christine. Their still together, they bought the corner house across road from St Eddies church on Scot Lane/St Marks Ave their livin up Shevvie now i think.Bri Wood never got hitched, found that really strange but their you are each to their own. Don't know the name Tierney H. Gormleys were there- Kevin, Brian, and Christine- salt of the earth family. Christine Gormley. She was with a guy who looked like he was about 15 years older than her. Was that Joe Lock. Not sure, think Christine got pregnant when she was about 16 but really not sure. Felt really sorry for her as it looked like lamb to the slaughter. Guy I saw her with looked like he could have been her dad. It felt like the twilight zone everyone was growing up so fast.. Bri Wood?? Lost me there H

Christine Gormley married Ste Calland, yeah he was a lot older. When i got married we got a house in Worsley Hall, was only there abt a year then moved back to the village in a house across from my mums back in Blenheim rd. Christine Gormley lived directly across from us. We were there abt 3yrs then moved up were i am now in Goose Green. Joe Lock (o'Loughlin) was cousin to Kevin and Keiron who played for Wigan. I thought you knew Bri, lived in Viscount mated with Billy Kenny and John Hare, he worked at Bulldog tools, think he still does actually. Tierney,s lived directly opposite Phill Yates i think, same side as you a bit neare Dick Roby,s. They might have moved in when you left, might have even been in your house now i come to think.

Posted by: smellbang (82) Report abuse
Watcha H, When we lived there Phil Yates lived opposite us but 3 doors down to my left, or 2 doors from John White's.
Ronnie Dootson lived next door to John White. The Hamill's next to Ronnie. At the back on John White's and Ronnie's was where Vinny lived. Dick lived in the top right hand corner. So you didn't like Worsley Hall then H? Where Billy Kenny lived there was a large field. To the right was Pem school. We used to play football on it. Can't remember the name of the field. Anyway when you crossed it you came to another estate- was that Worsley Hall? It's been best part of 35 years so can't remember. There used to be a place near we called the White City. When you went back to the 'village'(ha ha) did you play polo or did you prefer fox hunting? What happened to Precious Blood church? Who did Dick end up marrying H? Kieron O'loughlin played at the same time or close to a guy named Jim Hornby who played for Wigan- on the wing I think. Had so many rugby battles with him as school boy. He nailed me every time. He played stand off then. Think I only scored once against him. He didn't really make the grade which surprised me.

The field your on about WAS between Marsh Bonk and Worsley Hall, Rose Hill it,s called. Its still there, it hasnt been built on. When you cross over Rose Hill, the great divide as we call it haha a bit further down from Pem school you came to the Montrose Hall pub which is now a chinese or Indian restaurant. Pem boys school was knocked down and a bigger mixed school was built. Dick married Julie Glover from Brabazon place opp Blenheim rd, she had a brother Jem. The Precious Blood got pulled down it got to old and run down, dont know if you rmmbr but it wernt a solid brick buildin, mainly timber clad. Dont know if i mentioned Stork was pulled down n all. The White houses were on Norley Hall which is in between Worsley Hall and Kitt Green, do you remember Norley Hall quarry? at the back of st Thomas,s club, it was a really deep pit,we used to go swimming and climbing up the faces nestin. Somethin else you may remmbr, at the bottom of Marsh Green inbetween Beech Hill there used to be a massive rubbish tip called the GANT and a sewage farm. It was filled in and now the Wigan Latics and Warriors ground is built on it. No wonder the Latics are shite, Warriors arnt tho were brilliant haha.Anyway mucka Wiganers are down at Wembley next Saturday so save us some pies else we waint be able tcope hehehe. Kin ell H, Your memory for details- you should write a book lad. That's it- Rose Hill. I remember that quarry. Not sure but didn't someone die near there. How the --ck do you still remember the GANT. I try and tell people about it but they don't understand. You are bloody amazing you H. They've not built on Rose Hill? Yeah, that's it- White Houses. Precious Blood was clad wasn't it H? It had a large cross on the front. Nothing wrong with your marbles lad (ha ha) Thought no bugger would remember the GANT. Stay lucky Bud. Maybe Dick married 2 women?

Yeah that,s right,it was Kath now you mention it soz. I remmbr one year near xmas, there was a massive warehouse fire at the catalogue firm at back of Mesnes Park. Everthin and i mean everthin you could think of that was smoke damaged was thrown on the Gant and bulldozed over. That very night everythin was dug back up and sold all over the village. Every1,s house Xmas mrng stunk of smoke when the kids were openin their presents hahahaha. I think 99% of kids all had the same prezzies, blow up Sammy seals,Beano +Dandy albums,Subuteo, monopolys, and Lego hehe. PARTY SCATTER

Ha Ha, you make me laugh you do H. I once found the throw away of a professional lab on the Gant. I used to mess with chemistry sets as a kid. Mi mam nearly had heart failure. I was trying to make a firework with these chemicals, mi mam thought I was making a bomb. I brought home all sorts of chemicals , big containers of it and put them all together. God knows how I didn't blow my head off. I loved the Gant it was like looking for treasure when you were as poor as we were. It's hard to tell people you spent your childhood looking through a rubbish tip- and lovin it. You should do stand up comedy you H.

Its also hard to tell people you spent your childhood makin clay shoes with the clay out of the quarry, lettin em bake hard then havin a "kickin shins" competition with your mates. the winner was the last one who's shoes ddnt fall to bits not the one with the most bruises . We also spent day's n day's diggin up a tree stump n found some baby rats, i took em home and kept em in a cage cos i thought they were mice hehe. Kid's are wrapped in cotton wool nowaday's. We ddnt even know what cotton wool was. I ddnt know what "get to your bedroom" was either cos ddnt have one of my own till i was 13 when my sis left home. We only bought News of the World for bog paper cos you could get a full weeks of squares out of one paper (well there was seven of us he )

We used to get one or two bottles of corona pop- between 3 of us, till the man came around selling em again. Mi mam bought a bicycle on HP. I made mine myself from parts I found in the quarry. Christmas presents, don't be daft- never got any. Holidays- you having a laugh. We went to Southport once for the day. I thought Dick Roby was posh coz he went to Wales for a holiday. Mi dad used to get this newspaper from abroad. I used to look forward to it as it was really soft for the bog. If you told young folk this they'd think you were talking about the time during the war-ration books and all that. They don't know they're born

Fond memories too.

Sad news about Eric. Got to know him at Foster-Len for a short while in 1976/77. Over the past couple of decades we would bump into each other, a few times a week, at the Whelley shops and have long chats, putting the world to right. A true gent.
