Queen Street (Wigan) Coat Of Arms
Started by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
What was the coat of arms/badge that was on some of the houses in Queen Street?

I seem to recall it being something like the Salvation Army emblem, or a rope and anchor motif.

You can see where one of them has been removed and replaced with bricks in Paul Green's picture. (Top left above the two air vents)

Mr Green's photo from here.

Yes I remember the shield badge on there, was they not Almshouses when built?

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
I can't seem to find any insignia of the Almshouses that may have been on there. I have a distant memory of my dad telling me that the badge was something to do with the Army or Almshouses, maybe I was confused at the time or misheard him.

I think these houses were owned by the Church Army(Which is a different organisation from the Salvation army) at one time. I can't see the inscription either. Must go to Specsavers.

1939 Jan. 24. - Six Church Army houses in Queen Street for low wage-earners opened by Mrs. David, wife of Bishop David of Liverpool.

Well done Nokomis. I should have listened to my owd dad properly, I knew he said Army or Alms.

Can't find a badge though for church army houses.

Posted by: nokomis (768) Report abuse
Joseph I don't even know if the Church Army still exists, but I'm sure someone on here will. Perhaps the badge was one of their emblems. Thanks for the link - now I have seen the Chronology section I will be delving in there

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
Yes they do still exist here is their logo.....

Not sure if this is what was on the Queen street houses though.

Posted by: nokomis (768) Report abuse
Doesn't match Dustaf's description of Rope and Anchor. I think these houses are now owned by a Housing Association. Probably the emblems were removed on change of ownership.

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
I remember it being as a shield on the house but I can't remember the motif.

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
Cheers folks.

Nokomis. I'm not sure what the emblem was, rope & anchor may be miles out.

I have obviously confused Church Army with Salvation Army.

You can't see the emblem in the pic I posted, but you can see a square of new brickwork.

Shield rings a bell. And going off Josephs info, I wonder if it was the diocese of Liverpool crest?

From here.

The ship could be why I thought of the anchor connection.

Dustaf

That is the crest of Diocese of Liverpool. I have just found a confirmation card with it on. The only difference is - above the shield, there is a bishop's mitre with 2 ribbons (probably used to tie it on his head) coming out of the sides. These could look like ropes from a distance. I will take a photo and see if I can get it to you . Not time to do it now. May be there by 9pm tonight

The reason I asked my dad what the badge was on the houses is because it looked like his 8th Army badge.....

But I can't honestley remember what was on the shield.

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
Thanks again both.

I may be completely wrong with the rope & anchor.

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
Your welcome mester.

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
There must be a photo of it somewhere or someone must know what it was.

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
I've had a look on 'google streetview'. There are five pairs of semi's in Queen Street. Coming from Chapel Lane, the first, second and fourth pairs have had emblems on them.

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
Had a look myself, mester.

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse

That's a good pic of the Hovis van (Chapel Lane) and the car withthe door open at the lights (Queen Street)

I even had a peep at the 'adult shop' while I was in Queen Street.

The image directly outside seems to have been obscured.

looking at the pictures of Queen St I didnt recognise it if it is the same Queen st , the one I remember in my minds eye was just past the overhead railway bridge in Wallgate on the left , I remember it as a dark st when Mum used to take me to Hawkins Print shop on the right of wallgate for cotton material , those were the day 2/11 for a yard

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
That's the one Elizabeth.

Thanks Dustaf whats the song , What a difference a Day(years) make

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
Aye.

At peak times it's a very busy street too. (It's a one-way, Wallgate > Chapel Lane)

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
Bloody dangerous too down there, for drivers and pedestrians.

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
True.

Mind you mester;

It's probably safer for both groups these days, now every one's not looking up at the houses and wondering what's on those shields.

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
Aye it is!

Re photo of Liverpool Diocese emblem - sorry its taken over a week. Wigan Metro Highways dept accidentaly cut through our cable Tv, phone and broadband line on Monday and only got it back on yesterday. I have now got the photo on from my camera. If you still want it, I will try to Email it to Brian to pass on to you. I think uploading it would be beyond me or would take me at least another week

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
Cheers Nokomis, I have seen the one with the mitre but I don't think it's the one on the houses. I'm sure the detail was all contained within the shield.

I hope the Metro have made suitable ammends.

Posted by: nokomis (768) Report abuse
Evening dustaf My picture is the same except for the ribbons on the mitre just a bit thinner. I dont think the Metro will be making any amends but Virgin will be sending them a big bill for the work they needed to do. I suspect they did a lot more than they really needed to do but I am no expert on technical matters. They can feyt it out between them.

I keep getting the iamage of an upright sword in my mind.

Think I may be getting mixed up with the SHAEF badge/emblem (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force) though.

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
At least your sorted now Nokomis.

I can't quite place the image Joseph.

And it can't be all that long since I sast saw the things. I'm even wondering if the shield was blue now.

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
No it was deffo sand/stone coloured turning a nasty dark grey due to the pollution of traffic.

Posted by: dustaf (inactive) Report abuse
Yes.

Posted by: joseph 1 (inactive) Report abuse
But..... it may have started off blue.

Pub that used to face them.ROPE AND ANCHOR.or was it CROWN AND ANCHOR.

Posted by: Joseph77 (inactive) Report abuse
Can anyone add to this? The question of the plaques/Shields came up again in the family so I thought I would ask again, anyone got a photo or knows what was on the shields and what the houses were. Thanks.
