Gerry Lewis was not from there he used to drive the coach

25 links in a pole. 4 poles in a chain. 10 chains in a furlong.

A furlong is the length of a furrow, ploughed into a field.

I wonder how Bam furlong got it's name?

Hi tina, people will problaby remember arthur smalley who gerry worked for, arthur's son still lives there in same house, the name of company was wm liptrot who was a coach propieter and coal merchant, i think arthur also dealt with funeral directors, i have had some e-mails & photos of bill with gerry on them, good old days.

Arthur Smalley did do funerals, in fact, up to my Dad passing away, it was a bit of a family tradition for us to use him.

I thought that the coal man in Bamfurlong was Bob Butler?

Anyone remember "Bert fish"???

Do you know how Bamfurlong got its name, Tonker?

I don't but I have seen it spelt in a few different ways in old books, for example Beinfurlong, but all ending in furlong.

According to "The place names of Lancashire" its been known by a couple of names:

Banforthlang (in 1448)Banforthland (in 1538) Banforlonge (Hall) (in 1553) Bamferlonge (in 1584) Apparently, the name is derived from old english names for peas or beans.

Thanks for the explanation Uncle Joe, sounds like that could be it...Bean Furlong...maybe they grew them there, or just ate a lot of them!

Replied: 28th Apr 2009 at 16:41

Posted by: uncle joe (708)

If I'm truthful, I'm not 100% certain that Bamfurlong being translated as "bean field" is correct. That translation comes from old english, and around that area, its more likely to derive from scandinavian. The north of England, (when I was a youngster!) was in the area known as Danelaw, the south in Mercia. Danelaw was the viking influenced part, Mercia the english.

In caes you didnt know, there is another Bamfurlong in Glouctershire. Its probably only a shoddy copy though!

Her father (Our GGGrandfather) is Heinrich Frohn and he was a cooper spelling of Frohn is accurate from the marriage certificate. She came to England at age approx 17/18yrs and worked in service in Sevenoaks chesire and before her marriage. Have previously spoken to Auntie Millie who doesn't have any more onfo, but maybe in time some will come back to her. Its amazing what a fraction of information will uncover. I have often thought of how hard it must have been for her. Beryl

I'm a bit confused here. I remember the chippy at 629, which was near the entry. Was there another one? Then there was a shop right at the other end of that row (ie, farthest away from the Jolleys entrance). On the other side of the road, at 626 was another shop, Bishops, which I think closed around 1975 or so.

Derek, my brother was always doing things like that, ask MM!

On about 'Chippys' I grew up in Bamfurlong in the 1960's and in the late 1960's the only chippy I recall was the one which was in the row of terraces opposite the Bamfurlong Hotel near the railway bridge, these were knocked down circa 1971 after we had moved away to Pemberton, but as I recall 'Finneys' across the road installed a frying range and tried to take over from the demolished 'chippy' but I don't think it lasted

Barbara was a few years older than me (not many) and on a few occasions she actually baby sat me

We moved away from Bamfurlong in 1971 and Barbara visited us in about 1973 and by then she had married and 'yes' she had married a policeman and he was with her when she visited, he was actually a BTP policeman (British Transport Police) they patrol the railways.

The next time I came across Barbara was in 1980 and she had a shop on the Millers Lane Estate in Platt Bridge which she called "Pat's Girls" this seemed an unusual name for a shop, but it looked to be doing well.

In the early 1980's I moved away from the Wigan area and lived in Atherton for a while, which is not something I would recommend for a Wigan person to do, because they are a funny lot in Atherton, that I can tell you

The next time I visited Millers Lane was in 1986 and Barbara's shop had gone and it doesn't surprise me to hear that she moved out of the area, because I have never seen anything of her since 1980

Has a "by the way" is Bamfurlong still called the "Posh" part of Platt Bridge

I remember some of the names on here, though, wonder if anybody knows some others - Brian Calder, David Rigby, the large Hodgson family from Bolton Rd., and a lad called 'Satch', don't know real name. Also some girls who lived at the Bryn Hall pub (Wrights, twins?) and Elsie Jones from Lump.

My dad passed away in 1994 so I cant confirm and my mum has just gone on holiday so I cant ask her until she gets back. I spent a lot of my childhood with Winnies son Derek and his wife Sylvia. Kathhwal

I can't say for definite that Barbara closed the shop, she might have sold it, but in 1986 when I visited the Millers Lane estate I could not place the shop from memory, it being 6 years since I last visited there.
There had been some demolition on the estate, because it was probably the worst Council estate in the Borough back then and some of the tenants were scumbags, in some of those maisonettes you could not see the grass in front because of rubbish which had been thrown out of the windows, if one of the scumbags opened a tin of beans, they did not chuck the empty can in the bin, they chucked it out of the window instead

So I concluded at the time that the shop had either been demolished or altered externally to such an extent that it was unrecognisable from how it looked in summer 1980

Wanner my dad and Aunty Winnie were brother and sister (my dad being (one of the many) older siblings - Aunty Winne was the youngest of the children.

Wanner the older members of your family will remember our Molly going to Sheila's for her hair done. Molly was a singer in the local clubs - just wondered whether they are aware she died on 19/8/2010 and sadly her husband Jack then had a stroke and he died in hospital on 27/9/2010 - I'm sure your family will know Molly as she was close to Aunty Winnie. There is going to be a fund raising event in November in memory of Molly and for the Alzheimers Association, they were in the early stages of trying to set this up when Jack died. I'm sure they will start planning this when they begin to feel a little better after this awful twofold shock.

The Millers Lane and Woodcock Drive Council estates were the problem in Platt Bridge and the scumbags on those estates probably didn't even come from Platt Bridge originally

The indigenous people of Platt Bridge, who are known collectively as being the “Wazzers” not the immigrant scumbags who inhabited Millers Lane & Woodcock Drive (I know they weren’t all scumbags) the Wazzers are alright and you can tell a Wazzer by their accent, it is a wonderful deep Lancashire accent

I worked with Frank Keenan for many years until his retirement.Frank had served in the Royal Navy prior to joining the railway and could he tell some tales. A great bloke to work with never a dull moment or a cross word. He had a brother called Jim who worked for J. Strange slaughter house. I heard that frank passed away about 10yrs ago but not sure about it.

Copperhead,
He was certainly still alive when I left Abram in 2006. Maybe Bluesman can advise us. I will do some checking.

"apls,is the Joe Tinsley the one who was a train driver at Springs Branch,if so he's still going strong"

I have only just seen this utt and yes that is the Joe Tinsley that I mentioned before and he was a loco driver at Springs Branch and when I was about six years old his daughter Barbara took me on a long walk (it seemed like it at the time)to Bamfurlong Sidings where Joe was driving a small steam loco which I suppose was a shunter and he gave me and Barbara a ride on the footplate of the steam engine, which looking back now is something which I can feel very lucky about, I wonder how many people who have seen pictures of Bamfurlong sidings can say they rode on the footplate of a steam loco there,

I am glad to hear that Joe is still going strong, do you know if he still lives in Bamfurlong utt

Being pedantic, it was Sally/Leah/arthur that had the chippy opposite the Bryn Hall. Berts business was selling fish. If you think about it, it wasn't opposite Jack Wrights, but Lloyds...

While we're on about Bamfurlong, does anybody remember Arthur Grundy, he worked at Plank Lane pit and used to do a Disco or summat at Jolly Jacks in the early 1980s.
Some of the young lads at the pit used to call him "the oldest swinger in town", that's when the term "swinger" meant something entirely different to todays meaning.

Sir Bob, my best friend at the age of about 14 was Shelia Disley from Spring View.

She actually saved my life, I walked too close to the edge of a pond and fell in when the edge crumbled. It was deep. I couldn't swim. And she got me out.

We lost touch many years ago, but I do still think of her.

I wouldn't be here without her.
