Ex servicemen's club
Started by: pieman (35) Report abuse
Has there ever been an ex-serviceman's club or a soldiers and sailors club in the Brynn Gates / Bamfurlong area that was open in the 1930's.

Thanks Beryl , you wouldn't happen to know whereabouts it was ?

Can't recall street names as I have been out of the area for some 40 + yrs but if I remember correctly it was somewhere in the vicinity of the Methodist chapel on the opposite side of the road. It was set back off the road. I am sure that during the evening someone on here can be more precise.

Thanks again Beryl. I've managed to find a map of Ashton from 1939 and it shows a club at the top of Bryn Gates Lane set back from the main road so that must be it.

Was that not Jolly Jacks? Going through Bamfulong from the Platt Bridge direction it was on the bend on the right hand side just before the Bryan Hall on the left. I think there is a police station there now.

You're right broady I remember a club being called Jolly Jack's , maybe that's what people called it , could have been a popular steward/landlord.

As others have said, it was known by the name Jolly Jacks. It was demolished to make way for the Police Dispersal Centre. If my memory serves, its correct name was Bryngates DS&S club.

berylh, did you used to live in Bryngates/Bamfurlong?

Posted by: berylh (1682) Report abuse
Hi uncle joe - yes I lived at Brungates for about 12 years, although my Dads family lived in Bamfurlong for most of their lives Hallsworth is the family name.
