Golborne North Station
Started by: ashtonman01 (74) Report abuse
I know this isn't strictly about Wigan as such, but does anyone remember Golborne North railway station which was located on the A573 (Wigan Rd). According to disused stations the station was primarily used more for goods than as a passenger station, unlike Golborne South station.

I've mentioned the station to people who lived in Golborne at the time, including my dad who lived there for a few years, and they don't seem to remember it.

Here's the info about it:

The map shown on the link above indicates that the line crossed over the road and over the mainline, but the b/w photo appears to show that the station was at a raised lever on a hill or bridge, so I presume there was once a bridge there where the bungalows are now situated?

The line went over the A573 near to where Murphy's offices and yard are now. The station was an all timber construction painted white, as I remember. The line joined the Wigan Central to Irlam and Manchester line at Lowton St. Mary's in one direction, and went to Haydock Park Racecourse station, then near to where Byrchall School is now and then continued its weary way to Haydock and St Helens Junction.
So, Golborne had 2 stations and now has none.

I thought Beeching's involvement in the axeing of the stations was during the 1960s?, 1952 (when Golborne North closed) seems a tad early. Not all the stations closed were a direct cause of the Beeching Axe, a lot of stations closed years before due to nationalisation or through decline in passenger numbers.

So when was the bridge that the line passed over at that point demolished?.
