Bryn Gates Terrace
Started by: kenee (1944) Report abuse

In the 1871 census my Great grandparents are shown as living at Bryn Gates Terrace Ashton. I can't find it on the map but I imagine it would be in the Bryn Gates area. Does anyone have any knowledge of it's whereabouts?

I havent a clue where it was, but would like to know.

Presumably it was a side street off what is now Bolton Road, but would have been Lily Lane back then.

Surely somebody on here must have an idea where it was?

Bryn Gates Terrace wouldn't be the name of a street, it would be the name of a row of houses. Provident Terrace and Lilywell Terrace are still standing on Bolton Road.

That was my first thought but wouldn't their address be Bolton Road ?

You need to look at other entries. The enumerator would not enter the full address. He would start with Bolton Rd and when he came to a named terrace would just enter that name then return to Bolton Rd. You should be able to check his full route at the beginning of the census record.

Bryn Gates Terrace is on the 1893 map. It is on Lily Lane just about opposite where Bryn Gates Lane now starts. Next to it are Lily Cottages then Bryn Gate Farm.

Could someone post that part of the 1893 map on here please?

not sure how to copy from the old maps website. To access the site try

www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/359219/400314/12/101394

zoom out by tapping on the - sign a few times until the map appears with Lily Farm on it, this is on Lily Lane.

use the up arrow to move upwards until you come to Bryn Gate Hotel.

use the right arrow and you will see Bryn Gate Terrace.

Hope that's clear and works on your machine !

Thanks for that, tom cros. From the map, it appears that Bryn Gates terrace is/was on what is known as 4th Street if I read the map correctly.

Yes around about 4th street and Kintbury street

Thanks. I should have said Brynn Hall Hotel not Bryn Gate Hotel. There are still a lot of old buildings in the area which is unusual as the council normally demolish anything of interest in Wigan.
