Been to Wigan today and it breaks your heart to see the Market Hall that we all knew and loved with it's heart ripped out of it, it's so depressing. Shame on those behind it.

Just been saying the same Peter. The powers that be just don't seem to be able to see the wood for the trees.

Well, when the Leader of the Council earns more than the Prime Minister, not counting all the others, they have to charge these rates.

Peter Smith, the Council leader, is an educated and experienced politician.
He has been in a senior position on the Council for 34 years. However, he and his predecessor are guilty of allowing the cabal of executives from a town planning bacground to run riot in Wigan. The results are there for all to see.
The politicians may as well have said to the executives 40 odd years ago. ' Do your best and make a complete balls of Wigan.'

About 15 years ago myself and a friend did a lot of travelling all over the country. In every place we went there was an Edinburgh Woolen Mills! It got to be a standing joke to look out for the local branch.

There are so many town centres now that look just the same.

Two more major blows to Wigan Councils master plan 1st the tower arcade plan for a hotel etc has been scrapped they now want to built flats and 2nd the Galleries project is on hold because the portfolio has been sold on and the dammed yanks are going to have a rethink now Morrisons are closing

I'm not going to know the place next time I come home!

If those daft buffers in the planning department had left well alone for 25 years, Wigan would be a much nicer place, and they would have saved millions that could have been used for conservation of the beautiful old buildings.

A friend of mine went to Chorley last Tuesday. He said the market was brilliant, the shops many and varied and it was £1 to park for three hours. People are finding alternatives to Wigan and when Wigan Council see sense and reduce the parking rates they will discover the meaning of those two sad words...."Too late".

I went to The Edinburgh Woollen Mill in Beverley, intending to buy a woollen sweater, but all they had were acrylic!
