This is the map link ----Here----- that Dodger posted for us of the local area , just fill in Town, post code and add these two numbers at the bottom in OS coordinates 356175---400299 then pick the year you would like to look at

Posted by: uncle joe (588) Report abuse
Dougie, thanks for posting the factory houses link, I'd missed it last time.

Looking at the map on that link, there is the name Marl Bank, which is new to me. I always thought that the mill was on the other side of the brook (near where the "k" in bank is). On the map, it is shown as being on the other side of the little "one ended" brook, and not in between as I thought.

Is it just my memory playing tricks on where the mill was? Did anyone ever find any photos of the actual mill?

Posted by: bambam (1620)  Report abuse
Hi dougie, sorry it's taken so long I only come out of Wythenshawe hospital on wed night,i had to have a growth removed from my left lung but im on road to recovery now.

Joe--I always thought that the mill was on the other side of the brook (near where the "k" in bank is
So did I just under the bridge

Joe--On the map, it is shown as being on the other side of the little "one ended" brook
if you mean the buildings on the right at the end of the brook they would be in the mill fields on the right as you go in, could them be the Barrock for Lord Gerrads Army

MARL BANK,
The pair of semis at the bottom of Rectory Road, close to the crossroads, are named Marl Bank and have a date of 1887.

Posted by: whups (2113)  Report abuse

ALL - it may have been asked previously.. if it has then please except my apologies.

WHY was the fun day in Downall Green called JELLY DAY ???

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
It was Walking Day that was called Jelly Sunday...
I'm not sure myself but someone will tell us i'm sure.
But we always had house parties on that day and all the family and friends came for tea and we always had jelly.

Posted by: Campfire (573)   Report abuse
Thanks trixie.
I remember years ago walking up to the Church at Downall Green and the roads being packed with folk, I think it was around May time but not sure ??? The pub had standing room only and everyone was enjoying the day.
Also remember having a pint with Colin Hayes, he moved to Bryn when he got married but always talked about Downall Green at the pit. He once took me to a shed for a pint of home brew and the shed was called the "Chestnut Suite" what a afternnon that was....Does anyone recall the shed?

Posted by: RobinG (433) Report abuse
Campfire.

The correct name for the day was 'Trinity Sunday', this was when the Churches of Holy Trinity and St Andrews, Garswood came together for a walk around Downall Green with bands playing and banners flying, with everyone dressed in their best Summer outfits. A Service was held on the village green, and then as Trixie said, everyone went home for a party when lots of Jelly and Custard were consumed. A wonderful day was had by all.

Posted by: bambam (1620)  Report abuse
Hi campfire, I remember jelly sunday very well I walked from 5yrs old to 15yrs old, we used to get all the gear from annie deacon's shop on rectory rd, as Trixie says all the famalies after the event went home for tea and the ladies had been cooking all day, everyone had jelly with whatever {hence} jelly sunday, the blue bell pub and the village club was absouletly packed out, I was also a very good friend of colin hayes and had spent time in the chestnut suite then staggered back to d-green the worse for wear, it's such a pity they do not celebrate jelly sunday like they used to.

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Sorry Robin.i omitted to mention the most important thing "Trinity Sunday" etc..
My 3 children all walked at trinity.
I got carried away with all the talk of all that Jelly. we always had red and it's still the most favourite.

Posted by: bambam (1620)  Report abuse
Hi Trixie, I bet you can make a good jelly.

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Yes bambam i have lots & lots of practice.
Break Jelly up in squares in a jug, add a little water put in microwave (modern method )for about a minute then stir till disolved, add cold water to the required measurement.i find it sets quicker this way.
Everybody having jelly tomorrow?

Posted by: bambam (1620)  Report abuse
Oh thanks Trixie, I will remember and try that I aint never made a jelly only ate loads

Posted by: Campfire (573)   Report abuse
bambam - I'm pleased that you also frequented the "Chestnut Suite" can you recall the bloke who owned it? When was the last time you seen Colin Hayes, I've not seen him for years..

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Well i don't know if it is widely known but they don't have a resident Rector there now,not sure if they are getting a replacement for the last one.

Posted by: bambam (1620)  Report abuse
Hi campfire, yes I know the chap who owned the chestnut suite he still lives in cedar grove, not seen colin in years but I bumped into his brother Stephen at raei he tells me colin is fine, when im better I will go find him.

Wow Trixie, that is the first time in my memory there hasn't been a resident Rector at Holy Trinity..... That was never my Church, I went to DG Methodist , but I would hate to see that Church go into decline... My Great great great great Grandmother was born in 1827 in Downall Green... Married there and both she and my Great great great great Granddad are buried there.. I only learned of that a couple of years ago, so when I go over this summer, I will be going to Holy Trinity to find their grave...

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Yes it a sad time.Margaret still does flowers there.they have someone who does the services and funerals and i presume Weddings that goes to different churches.there is still a caretaker Lady..i must ask Sylvia how they go on with the choir, surely they must still have choir practice.
I will try and get more info.the house next to the church must be empty too. I was confirmed there and i got Married there nearly 51 years ago and all my children were Christened and confirmed there as well.my Grand parents and other relatives buried there.

Posted by: suesa (515) Report abuse
Hiya jouell & trixie, I have been told that there will be another Rector at Holy Trinity but it does now take a few months to decide on the candidate (think they need to apply - like a job) It is a shame to not have a Rector there straight away, I guess that things have changed over the years. I'm assuming the information I have been given is correct no doubt if anyone knows different they will let us know.
I think all Downall Greeners have some link with the church. I was Christened there, confirmed there, married there 43 yrs ago and brought all my children home as babies - from wherever we were living - to be christened there. Also have family buried there. I'm sure it will all work out ok .....

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Thanks suesa very good to know.it will be interesting to see how they go on.

Posted by: erwick (121) Report abuse
The Church will not be having another full time permanent vicar / rector until a debt has been paid off?????
At this point in time I'm unaware of the amount of debt involved, or indeed what is being done to reduce the same.
I, like many people have had dealings with the Church for many years, plus my great, great grandparents before me.

Posted by: suesa (515) Report abuse
Thanks for that Eric. I hadn't heard that. Hope it's not too long before there is a permanent rector in place.

I've been away for a few days it's nice to come home see you've all been talking to each other ,

jouell--Dave told me in the club last week you were coming over in July wouldn't it be nice if another reunion was coming up like last time you came over

Just like to add the very first time any women were allowed in the Village club for a drink was on a Trinity Sunday

Posted by: RobinG (433) Report abuse
Hi Dougie. Happy New Year to you, hope you had a good holiday. Thick frost down here in Kent, but the sun is shining in a clear blue sky. Hope they get Holy Trinity Church sorted out soon, wonderful Church, unfortunately, I did not get time to look round when I came up for Joe's funeral the other week, on that point, Seasons greetings to trixie and erwick. Must go now as I am about to get the train up to London as I have a RAF meeting at mid-day.

We got married at Holy Trinity Church in 1975 and our eldest was christened there in 1978 but when our second son was born in 1981 Rector Abbott would not christen him because we lived in another parish

My Daughter was Christened & Confirmed and lived in the Parish but he would not Marry her as she had not attended Church so after much upset.they went to St Peters,no problem.

I wondered how he went on with buriel if the person had not attened Church!!

Posted by: erwick (121) Report abuse
Thanks Janet, it would be good to see you. I've had a few health problems over Christmas/New Year so not managed to get in touch, but although not 100%, I'll try next week.

By the way whilst I was in the Doctor's surgery about 3 weeks ago, I met someone who was a "blast from the past".....she introduced herself to me because I hadn't seen her up close, but as soon as I went to her it was clear that it was Veronica Lowe (that was). In the very short time we had together she said that your Roy was coming back??

Veronica was at Rectory and Grammar school with us, but she talked to me as if I knew what she'd been doing the past 50 years or so. Don't know anything about her since school days, but it was nice to know that she recognised me!!

Posted by: jouell (4299) Report abuse
Eric, I don't remember her.. Wonder how she knew about Roy

Janet, with my family history head on, I see that a VERONICA LOWE married BILLY SIMM in 1971. Now the only Billy Simm I know is in the building trade with Don Wakefield, based at Bryn Road.
Does either of these families ring any bells?

Posted by: jouell (4299) Report abuse

Sad to report the death of an old friend and next door neighbour. John Sutton from Spindle Hillock sadly passed away at his family home in Robbinsville, North Carolina, where they had moved to in 2001.
John had cancer and knew that it was a question of time before the inevitable happened. 6 years as it turned out.
John and his wife, Alma had planned what was to be done after John's death and yesterday, Saturday I attended a "Celebration of John's life" at Birtle, Bury which was one of the things they had planned.
It was a moving few hours.
They had emigrated to America in 1978 and made a very good life for themselves in California and Florida.
It was good to meet up with Alma and her family and friends and also David Sutton, a nephew of John who I new from many years ago in Spindle Hillock.
Rest in peace John.

It isn't the same person. John Sutton who passed away was 69 and lived at 67 Spindle Hillock, son of Harry and Lucy Sutton, Hugh John is a number of years younger and son to Hughie and Elsie. They lived nearer to the railway bridge, unsure of the number.

We have been to the churchyard today to remove the Christmas pots and flowers from my Mams grave and replace them with her Mothering Sunday flowers, one thing I don't like seeing is Christmas pots and flowers left on people's graves for too long it's like the flowers are saying they've not been since Christmas (well that's what I always think)

I leave a brush there to give the grave and path a clean it only takes a few minutes and it looks better

Trixie, Rector Eaton is buried there along with his family, just as you go through the gate where the rubbish bins are.
Regarding the direction the gravestone is pointing, it's probably Rector Hall looking for the "Bell"???
The little boy holding Rector Hall's hand is Roger Dandridge, the grandson to Mr. Foster.

The story I have (which is true) probably points to the time of Rector Hall.

About 12 months before he died, he assaulted a teenager so badly that the victim required medical attention, and was confined to bed for a week. The attending physician was Dr. McCurdy, who tried to persuade the parents to report him to the Police...

Apart from myself, there are others that can corroborate this. Surprising, considering how well liked he was.

I remember Rector Hall's funeral as I was one of the bearers that carried the coffin into the Church the evening before the funeral, it was a very big affair. I was serving in the RAF at the time and wore my uniform. The car he drove was an Austin Seven, can't be sure about the colour, but I think it was black. I remember that he gave me a lift one day, and as I got in, he told me to mind where I put my feet, when I looked down at the floor, I could see the roadway through the holes in the floor, no MOT in those days.

Hi Robin, So you will be able to pick his plot from the photo I uploaded my Mam/Dad are the second grave down on the left, by the way the back of your old house is in clear view when you look across with it being winter,

Anyone remember the glass cover that was over Rector Williams grave in the 40s it's the first one on the corner if you were walking down towards the Dell,

Had a wonderful day today. I had the pleasure to be invited to the opening of the new education and learning centre at the Battle of Britain Memorial site at Capel le Ferne on the cliftop above Folkestone in Kent. The ceremony was performed by HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. As a Trustee of the Memorial, I had the honour to be introduced to them both, together with HRH Prince Michael of Kent, who is our Patron. Unfortunately, the weather could not have been worse, with heavy rain, high winds and mist, a planned flypast by a Spitfire and Hurricane, together with a Typhoon had to be cancelled. You can't win them all.

Posted by: jouell (4299) Report abuse
Very nice to Robin, I think you may be the only D Greener to have had the honour of meeting our Queen.. Imagine how thrilled your parents and Isobel would have been for you, as I am sure your wife and children are..

Too bad about the weather and the cancelled flypast.. The best planning in the world cannot control the weather....You still had a day to remember...I am happy for you....

Posted by: bert (563) Report abuse
congratulations Robin on meeting the queen.you must be very proud.

Posted by: RobinG (433) Report abuse
Hi jouell. Thank you, Mum would have been over the moon, she was always a huge fan of the Royalty. I took along my eldest daughter Suzanne with me as my guest, she was delighted to get so close to the Royal party, however, she did resist the temptation to get a "selfie" with the Queen as my grandaughter requested.

Posted by: jouell (4299) Report abuse
Oh my, I can't imagine anyone trying to take a "selfie" with the Queen. For your sake I am happy she resisted, otherwise she may have been the recipient of 'Glare' the Queen is known to give at times....
Anyway, it was a day you and your family will always remember.. good for you...

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Well done Robin,i suppose it was due to a lot of work you have done there.
I can imagine Suzanne enjoying it all as well.

Yes i think if your Mum was alive she would have beaten Suzanne to the post..
I think someone did get a selfie with the Queen last year but accidentally on purpose!

Thank you Dougie, that is so nice of you.. I'm choking back tears looking at the pics and the memories... Your 'Will the real Dougie please stand up ', made me laugh and you were standing on Rectory rd, with what were the old cottages and what used to be the Co-op on your left... I can't remember the name of who had the farm when I was young.. Are there any bluebells left in the woods? I remember Mrs Jolly with great fondness.. After I married and lived on Meadowcroft I used to see her when walking to DG and she still remembered me... The club looks very nice Dougie, I am very much looking forward to seeing everyone there 11 weeks from tomorrow....

Jouell-- They must now class Church and Farm in DG as being in Merseyside now but the farm is still in the Wigan borough

The shop I asked about was the posh ladies shop remember Joy Beverly's

if you look at the photo showing the seats and bar thats where Bert sits when in the club, I've took notice he alway sits on the back so he can't get out to go to the bar or It's so he doesn't miss anything as he can see all round

Could you not pick me out as we did meet about three years ago

I'm crying laughing here, I do miss the British humour, it goes right over their heads here....I can't wait to get over and see everyone...

Where was Joy Beverlys,? I have NO recollection at all of any posh ladies shop... I remember someone in one of the old Cottages off the Green made and altered dresses...but a shop????? Oh Boy, I'm getting worried now.....
Yes Dougie, I do remember meeting you at the reunion, I never knew you or any of your sibling, but I remember you, your brothers Ralph, Kenny and younger sister whose name has slipped my memory, Lily? I do remember she was a beautiful looking girl.. I don't remember your older sisters...
Today is Mothers Day here.. My daughter is coming to pick me up and we are driving down to the coast, to sit overlooking the water and relax... I'll talk to you all later....

Hope you had a nice Mother's Day as you call it over there

Joy Beverly's was the big shop on corner of Old Road in the 60/70s it would have been at the back of me when I took the photo of the British school in Ashton,

I remember someone in one of the old Cottages off the Green made and altered dresses yes Mrs Rotherham, Tony's Mum

You've still not said which of the three is me

I didn't know Joy, or whoever.. all day I was trying to remember a shop there, but the only thing I could think of was a chippy, then all of a sudden it came to me... I am pretty sure I got my daughters First Communion dresses from there...

Roy doesn't comment or anything on WW, but he does read the DG thread...That's how he knew your face Dougie, from reading on here... he'll probably have something to say after he reads this

Good evening all, sorry that I have not been corresponding recently, the reason being that I got so fed up with all the arguing and name calling, very rarely did you learn anything useful and even rarer was there a subject that you could have a sensible conversation about. There are a lot of interesting people on here, however, there are number of posters who just want to act like spoiled children and seem to post on the site just to get their name in print and not provide anything constructive. These people know who they are and need to take a good look at themselves, you are just ruining the site for the majority of those who just want to have a friendly chat with their friends. I myself have been very busy recently with RAF business, have been on Services and Parades in St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Peterborough Cathedral, Lincoln Bomber Command Memorial and next month I hope to be in Birmingham. I do hope that all my friends in D/G and elsewhere are keeping well, I do look on the W/W site every now and than but cannot be bothered to log on, this time I saw that my name had been mentioned, and thought that it would have been bad manners not to have replied. Best wishes to you all.

I have just had a text from my Daughter in Spain to say that Downall Green is flooded.
Can anybody confirm this?

Yes, Trixie.
Birch Grove near the bungalows is flooded.

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Well i have never seen it flood there before.
Near the dam corner yes but i would have thought it high ground near the bungalows.

Posted by: PeterP (5804) Report abuse
Birch grove floodedcannot blame Wigan councilDG comes under St Helens

Posted by: suesa (515) Report abuse
There's a video of it on Facebook that my daughter showed me. It is flooded from where Cowards lived to the next 7/8 houses toward Elm Ave. Apparently some of the houses are knee deep. I'm wondering if this has affected Annie Scully as she lives in that area. The bungalows are ok because they are raised but the fields at the back don't help. I remember water running down the paths in heavy rain from the fields when my Mum lived in the bungalows. Maybe Brian has some news of those affected.

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
I have not heard from Brian since beginning of Dec.he usually posts when anything happens round there.he must be ok as he lives at the opposite end
Has anybody seen him lately?
I cant find the video sues.

Can't help you there Margery, sorry. I am not on FB so it was a vid my daughter showed me. I will ask her how she found it. Brian Scully lives in Hawthorn and you're right he does usually have the gen about what is going on.

yes guys i can confirm that it has flooded in that area several times even wen i lived in birch grove next to albert coward . it comes from the fields at the back of the bungalows . it was always bad were robert,s & liptrots lived in the middle of that stretch of birch grove.

very good news erwick I went passed yesterday with my daughter and her son and she said how.she liked the church because that's.. were she was christened

Posted by: erwick (121) Report abuse
It certainly brought back memories, Bert. The road was grid-locked opposite the Bell. You couldn't move on or off the estate.
It looked as though there was a game on!
It's only at funerals in recent years when I've seen the church full, yet 50 or so years ago it was a common thing.
I remember putting the hymn and psalms on the boards before a service, and thinking to myself it's going to be a full house today. That went for both morning service and evensong.
Whether we get to those dizzy heights again, I'm not sure, but I hope we can give it a good try.

Good evening to my friends in Downall Green. Just catching up with the news, not a lot seems to have happened since I was looking on here at New Year. Sadly, a number of people have passed away, it is a fact of life that we are all getting old. Unfortunately, I havn't been in the best of health recently, but my family have been keeping me on my toes. Glad that Holy Trinity has got a new Lady Vicar, it is over 55 years ago that I sang in the choir, I do wish her the best of luck.

I heard recently that there seemed to be some activity (noises heard about a week ago ) in the fields of Mill Farm / Moor Lane Farm, possibly related to the gigantic solar farm that's been given the go ahead, either that or more illegal dumping of stuff at Moor Lane Farm.
Can Anyone confirm what's going on ?

Moor lane farm off downall green road has seen some activity recently a local Councillor is onto this, The fields adjacent to this Farm are the spoil and rubble from when they cut the M6 in the 50s, i personally cant see any building activity be authorized on that land.

Two questions for everybody.

1) I have a vague recollection of a garage behind the church on Victoria Road. Can anyone remember anything about it?

2) In the album, some photos have been posted of Albert Ormshaws garage on Booths Brow Road. Where exactly was it? My memory says on the corner of Brocstedes Ave. and Booths Brow Road. Am I right or wrong?

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
The garage behind is stiil i think.Dawsons.but it may be after your time up there.
My husband used to race sidecars with Derek.

I think the booths brow road one was down near Rectory road i think.
Opposite Jack Slaters Pen.

Posted by: whups (2113)  Report abuse
yes i remember it , but the guy thats now living in the end terrace has comomdeered the side road & the land brhing it.

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Derek lives in the right hand side house of the two houses before Mr Lowes and his Son Sean lives in the left hand side house by alleyway before what was police houses.

Posted by: bert (563) Report abuse
the garage opposite slaters pen was mr jobs.where he kept his wagon .he lived on poplar avenue next to Gloria Edwards.thats what I can remember.before that tommy aspinall used to park his coaches there.

Posted by: whups (2113)  Report abuse
not there bert it,s the 1 that used to be behind the methodist church in vicky road.

Posted by: uncle joe (588) Report abuse
I certainly dont remember Mr Jobs garage, thats the first I have heard about it. Chances are I've forgotten, its a long time since I was there.

The question I posed earlier still remains. Where exactly was Albert Ormshaws garage? Anyone know?

One more question. Is it possible to find out where a particular grave in Holy Trinity churchyard is? There is one that I would like a photo of to help complete some family research.

Posted by: erwick (121) Report abuse
Uncle Joe,
It is possible. I may be able to help. Have you the details of the person/people in the grave and approx. when they were buried?
There is a grave register kept at the church which has the details. The graves have numbers which then link to the plan of the grave yard
I do have some records which may help.

Posted by: uncle joe (588) Report abuse
Erwick, the name is Absalom Bailey, and the year of death is 1933. Thanks in advance for your help.

I dont know how many people are in the grave, or have any more details. Thats part of the reason I would like to see a photo of the headstone.

Posted by: erwick (121) Report abuse
Uncle Joe,
A progress report.
Absalom was buried on 26/9/1933 at Holy Trinity, aged 66 years. He was living at 628, Bolton Road at the time of his death.
Unfortunately the record I have doesn't give me a grave number, but I will see what I can do in the coming days.

Hi, Bert, i wasn,t sure of the Doctors name but now you mention Dr Fulton i think your right. Did Tony the icecream man live in the end house next to Dellside?

I live on Downall Green Road in a property that says The Greenhalches 1894 on the front. Does anyone know who the Greenhalches were or any history of the people who lived here?

Edited as I've seen your other post that tells us where you live

I haven't looked on here in a few days.. Sorry Bert, didn't mean to get you concerned, I was going to call you this afternoon, before I went to rest... then I remembered it was Fri and you would be off to the Club... My days are different now... I am 13 treatments in, 20 more to go.. but when I get home after my treatments, I have something to eat, then I go rest for a couple of hours... By the time I get up, it's 8 ish your time..too late to call anyone.. I haven't been in touch with anyone of late... Anyway, I am doing well with the treatments. hopefully I will continue that way through the next 20 and in a couple of months I will get the good news... then I can get back to my normal days..Hope you and all my DG friends are well..

Good evening all. Best wishes from the Garden of England, hope that you are all keeping well. At the week-end I called into Wigan on my way home from attending a RAF conference in Blackpool and once more stayed at the Premier Inn in Wigan, not bad at all. Sadly, Wigan seems to be still on the decline, there seemed to be very few people about when I looked round on Monday. After visiting Ince Crematorium to leave flowers on the grave, I continued on to Ashton by bus and again there were not very many people about, however, you do seem to have a reasonable bus service. Regards to you all. Robin.

Glad to hear that you got to pay a visit to Ashton Robin,
I have not been back for a couple of years now apart from going on a flying visit to Hindley to a funeral before Christmas.
One of these days i will make a trip down just to visit friends i have not seen for a long time.maybe even stop at the Bay Horse overnight.

Hope things get sorted for you Trixie, then you can be back on the cruises. You would be lost without a car here, 4 miles to the closest store and no buses.. I need my car that's for sure..

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
Well bert i bet she does miss cruising.but i guess someone will have to look after us sometime,i dread to think ,your right we have to carry on no matter what and we would not want it any other way.

It sounds like you are getting better jouell as you seem to be very busy hope your garden has not got neglected while you have been ill.
I spoke to Margaret last week she is doing well.

Posted by: jouell (4299) Report abuse
Sorry about that Bert, I know it hurts you all to see Darren like that and it is a lot of work.. I'll give you a call in a couple of weeks after school start..

Trixie, I really haven't had much choice, well or not things have to get done.. But I am beginning to feel better, more like myself, for the first time since Christmas...I still have to be careful about being outside, apart from it being extremely hot, I probably still have some radiation still in my system and I could burn badly, I don't want that...

So my garden is a disaster, partly because I haven't been able to get out there all year. Partly because we had a new roof put on a few weeks ago and they trampled all my Butterfly and Hummingbird garden and I can't get out to put it to rights yet..By the time I do and cut everything back it will be too late for them to flower again.. so I just went a and bought a few potted plants for the hummers and butterflys..

My husband cuts the grass, but that's his limit.. He is NOT a garden person , he has no interest and would love us to sell up and move into a Condo, but there is NO chance of that...

Glad to hear Margaret is doing well..My Best to her and All D Greeners..

Posted by: trixie (4810)   Report abuse
No i bet you dont want to get burned.it seemed an awful lot of radiation that you had.not prying and too private for you to expand on here. just that i saw your posting on how many sessions you had,

Just take your time with the garden not worth setting you back as getting back your health is more important.it will get done in it's turn...but not as often as before.xx
Ps can't say i blame you on the condo.

Posted by: bert (563) Report abuse
hi jouelle dont give in .don't give your garden and your lovely trees and wild life up.its nice to have all those things.they wanted me to think of moving in to a bungalow but I refused because I live so near every shop I need.so building a extension instead.if they get me in a bungalow it wont belong before they have me in a home for respite.elaine and my daughters say they have already picked my home.but they keep laughing.but that how it starts.not ready yet.

Hi Bert, I was thinking of phoning this afternoon, then I remembered it's Fri and you would be out...

Anyway, no chance of me giving up my house and garden.. my garden is my get away place, I can't imagine living somewhere with NO outdoor space... It is still very hot, 95F in the shade in my back garden as I type this, I can't handle it right now...So I just do what I can and wait for the cooler weather then I will have to do some serious cutting back of shrubs and trees...

Anyway, hope all DGreeners are doing well... I heard Dougie is missed at the club.. Hope you are ok Dougie.. Best Wishes to all..

Good evening all, so sorry not to have been in print for a while, unfortunately I have not been in the best of health recently, just seem to go from day to day. I do look on the site quite often to keep up with life in DG, and the majority of those that I knew seem to be doing well, although a number have moved on. Trixi; just spoken with Margaret, she seems to be keeping well, and told me that she had spoken with you last week, and that you were keeping well. I was looking at some pictures on the site the other day of Rectory School and saw one taken of my class in 1948, besides myself, I wondered how many of my classmates on the picture were still around. Best wishes to you all, I do think that there seems to be a much better atmosphere on the Site.

All the Colliers & the Drawers,
Were a sighing & a sobbin
When they heard of the death of a Dataler in a Dobbin, when they heared of the death of a Dataler in a Dobbin,

Who saw him die?
I said Fred Pye, with my little eye , i saw him die,+

Sung to the tune of Who Killed Cock Robin,

There is a lot more to it but i cant remember it,

Any ideas?

Don't remember that one off hand Tumtingle, when face training on the afternoon shift the foreigners made a song up about themselves as you know they were all good workers but better savers, always the same song only they would change the names of people and places,

something about their building society saving accounts somthing like it's so easy to put your money in not so easy to take your money out, as they saved every penny they could in the 50s

Tumtell,They used to say that Albert Clavins was the first chap to own a car paid for all in one go, last i heard of Teddy phillapeck he was in jail,

Posted by: dougie (3489)  Report abuse
Did part of my face training with them, Teddy was as strong as an ox but Albert was as strong as two,

on a Golborne thread they were talking about crawling up a yard mine face during the holidays they had to swim on top of the scuffins every morning to get on the face as the props were only 2`_6" at Stones

tumtell , you are right about the hight of the face, I did my face training with George Travis, They were a great set of lads,

Came on D Greeners and for some reason, I couldn't just press end and be there instantly, so had to scroll through.. Gosh, I have been on for ages, rereading some very interesting posts..

Some of the posts I read were about when I came over last year.. I was hoping to be over the this year, but it has been a year of Health problems, ending the year with Cataract surgeries, two weeks ago and yesterday.. Here's hoping this will be the end of health problems for a while..

The reason I came on in the first place, before I got so distracted, was, to Wish each and every one of our Downall Green Family, a

Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year..
May you all be Blessed with Good Health and the Wealth of Family and Good Friends around you..xxx
