Another farewell at Wigan market

Started by: i-spy (15241)

P&P butchers is the latest to shut up shop. I reckon that means the market now has just one traditional butcher

Just seen an inspiring report on BBC NW Tonight about the regeneration of Altrincham Market!

Yesterday, Altrincham Market and Market House scooped the prestigious 2015 Observer Food Monthly Award for the country's Best Local Market. (link)

From Altrincham Market's FB Page:

We have to say we're besides ourselves with pride and joy!

On behalf of the hundreds of our talented traders, the ten amazing kitchens and bars and the team of over 75 hard working managers and staff that make us what we are, we want to thank you all so much for voting for us.

Long live independents. Let's celebrate our regional identities. Let's 'misbehave' and fly in the face of corporations and bland brand engineers. Let's cut out the well fattened 'piggies in the middle' and let's dare to do something different.

We salute you all. I AM yours, truly.

Market House Altrincham

Passionately regional. Fiercely independent. Not available online....and, right now, officially the Observer Food Monthly ‪#‎bestmarket‬

I was told the other day that another off the Froot & Veg Stalls had closed down, but the chap from the Asian part of Bolton had returned to the stall outside in the alleyway at the side of Morrisons and was selling produce

"..... Santa this Christmas at his Grotto in Wigan Markets"?

How many markets has Wigan got? and will he be in them all at the same time?

commendable effort on your behalf, but its willpower from millgate that will turn the market around. starting with a huge drop in rent and rates .otherwise kaput.

Do any of you remember Charlie Winnard sold fruit and Veg he had a stall in the markets in the 50s I worked for him as a 12 year old shelling peas. For my trouble he gave me a cabbage and a cauli to take home to my mother .

BB - Wigan council (if that's what you mean by Millgate?) has no say in the rates.
The only 'willpower' that can save the market is the 'willpower' of the Wigan shoppers. 'Willpower' to make them spend their money in Wigan market, rather than in Tesco's, Morrison's, Asda's or Sainsbury's. Or, even, Bolton or Bury markets !
