Fishergate Inn - Orrell - year 1901
Family members once lived at
Fishergate Inn, 52 Orrell Road, Orrell, Wigan, WN5 8HD
dating back to 1901. The Worthington family (Henry and Martha) and I have not been able to find out anything and I have spent sometime looking.
Has it always had this name, has it ever been known as something else? When was it built?
Any information you can provide is appreciated

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I was actually trying to find out about the pub where my ancestors once lived. Did it ever have another name? When was it built? That sort of thing.

Sorry I misunderstood. You will probably get more help from
Wigan Life Museum centre. Offhand I'm not sure of the number but try googling said name and they are likely to have some information. Good luck

Barbara, I don't know where are living but are you aware that this Inn still exists? I would have thought that the current owners might know some of its history. The telephone number is 01942 375708 currently run by two guys called Steve and Jo. Apologies if you already know this

the Winstanley family ran the pub from 1871 to 1891. Widowed Ellen Winstanley was landlady in 1871 and 1881 then her son James in 1891.
The address is given as Fishergate Inn, Little Southport on the 1871 census. Anyone heard of an area of Lamberhead Green named as this ?

I have been able to find out the following since calling the Fishergate Inn direct and speaking to the current landlord Steve. Ray Lee became the landlord at Fishergate Inn on 13th February 1968 and retired on 26th July 1984. Ray still drinks in the Fishergate Inn now in his 80s. Current landlord Steve Wood confirmed the Fishergate Inn was built by Almonds Brewery from Standish. Research allowed me to find out - Almonds Brewery was right at the back of the pub called "The Whestsheaf". It was taken over by Burtonwood Brewey and demolished in May 1985. They sold the land to a developer who decided to build Somerfield Supermarket.
Steve confirmed the pub had an extension dating back to 1996 when the next door terrace house was bought for the purpose of extending. Pub use to have stables of which are now being used as a cellar
If anyone is able to share any other information or perhaps have photographs other than going on google street view please say and thank you!
