Cale lane would be the lane you mean you could also get to it from the side of smiths dairy and yes he did have quite a few caravans on that site before it became law to provide sites for people who wanted to put down roots.

careless lane...thats the one. most of the tenants on the site were travellers. i knew a romany guy called eric boswell, he was a giant of a man, and was the champion bare knucle fighter amongst all the travelling communities nation wide. if this man had taken up the fight game proffesionaly, he would have been a ledgend.

i recall old harrisons son, just the opposite to his dad, quite toffee nosed and full of self importance. his wife was the same. ive no doubt they made a killing with the sale of this large plot when old bernhard died.

They must have made a killing as you say with the amount of housing that went up on the site.

i recall top-o-the hill where morrisons is now and the council tip, used to be spare land with a lot of bolders scattered about. the travellers would burn off there copper cables and strip there scrap cars ect ect.every now ond again, a grudge fight would be held. lots of money for side bets too. anyone recall a guy called ellis gardner???he was an x miner who lived up there. he had a scrap with a traveller for a 25 quid side bet. old ellis was no pussy, he whupped this kid in very quick time.he bought the drinks in a pub up there called the BELL something or other.i forget.

Old Ellis died a good few years ago and lived just across the road from where I now live, I am friendly with his daughter and her husband, and have a lot of good, and not so good memories of old Ellis.

The pub you are on about Billy would be te Belle Vue, right at the top of Belle Green Lane past and to the left of the Prince of Wales There were quite a few scrap dealers up that end, Old Ellis used to buy it and also another family called Threfalls, they had a yard up there. The land where they are going to be building houses in front of Morrisons at the top of Petticoat lane in Ince, was owned and sold by them, and I can remember when they lived in a 2 up and 2 down terrace across from the Bush The house that they have sold was originally owned by the Longworth family who were mine owners (I think).

sorry to hear that aitch, cos in those days he was a nice lad. i am going back some time now as you will appreciate. i suppose the lad was around 18 at this time. but yes, he was scared stiff of old ellis. ah well, we are all heading in that direction, its just that these folk we once supped with are in a hurry, and have got an earlier bus to the spirit side of life. god bless em.
