Easter

Just been looking at the tv guide for the Easter holidays.
Not one religous programme. No biblical stories or films or Easter mass live from a Cathedral. Also, no Easter blessing from the Pope.
Is it me imagining it or did we once have all this on the tv?

Times are a changing, many people aren't into religion these days, when I was younger some fifty years ago, religion permeated every aspect of society and the BBC broadcast many hours of religious programming every week. Much of that has now disappeared in tune with religion’s dwindling number of followers. This isn't anything to do with being PC, it's unlikely that any broadcaster would put stuff on when it doesn't get much of an audience.

By the way billy, I don't think you must've noticed yesterdays date.

As an atheist,but not an ignorant one,I ask the question on a regular basis,just when does the Christian Easter week begin,and you would be amazed at the number of people who get it wrong,even those who claim to be of the faith.Mind you,they are not helped by those with a commercial interest in the festival. So how many of the members on this forum know?

It does begin on Psalm Sunday.
For 40 days before Easter there is Lent.
Starting on Ash Wednesday.

Eastertide as it is known,begins on Easter Day aka Easter Sunday and lasts for eight days. Many people refer to Easter Eve,quite wrongly,as Easter Saturday and some even call Maunday Thursday as Easter Thursday,once again incorrect. And you are right Dave,the date of the fetival is determined by the phases of the moon,in fact after the first full moon in April(?),as we all know this year it is the 8th.

Can't be the first full moon in April 'cos Easter is sometimes in March.

Easter is the First Sunday after the first ecclesiastical fullmoon that occurs after the first day of the vernal equinox. The vernal equinox is fixed as March 21st so Easter can never be before March 22nd or later than April 25th

It's rather strange that the christian religion should allow itself to be manipulated by what can only be construed as stargazing, surely, this shows that the whole thing is a myth. Then again, religion tries to dominate the superstitious.

This date is a movable date governed by the moon cycle on the jewish calendar
on this date Jesus died

This year nisan 14 falls on the 13th of April
so it looks like your are celebrating Easter day before Jesus died

"Easter day" has no references in the bible

JJ...i think you are overlooking an important fact here
to begin with, christianity had no festivals of its own to celebrate. it selected those that appealed to it from the pagan calender.easter was just one of them.i am of course talking from the onset of christianity.

you are right in what you say regarding Easter,and other celebrations
Christians did celebrate "The passover" which occured on nisan 13 and were doing just that on the evening before jesus died

and as you say
Easter is of pagan Origin as is Christmas

Is there any mention of Easter Eggs in the Bible?? They seem to be the definition of Easter these days - not that I am complaining being a chocaholic

On a serious note in answer to your thread DD, obviously aussies are more religious than the brits, we have a midday movie on Good Friday, Mary, Mother of Jeses and Mel Gibson's The Passion of Christ at 11 pm other than that there is as much football as you can poke a stick at, nothing new there.

Glad to see they haven't changed our Friday night feast of RL, 2 games on tonight. In the words of Roy & HG Slaven "Too much football is never enough". My sentiments exactly Which leads me to how is my other favourite team the cherry and whites going against the arch enemy??
