I hope extra measures have been put in place to protect yon mon in the Grand Arcade.

I suggest evacuating him to the Grand Hotel (Dorning House to non nationals) until the kidnappers are caught.

"Keith Bergman, Tourism Development Manager for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said: "We assessed the risk of vandalism and theft and put in place measures to manage such a risk.

"However, the level of determination and destruction seen with this incident was beyond our expectations."

Then i suggest that the "WE" who did the assessing should given their P45's forthwith as they are clearly not up to the job.

Makes me wonder if it's the right thing to do putting the SA war memorial back in the park. I would hate to see it vandalised by this mindless generation who care about nothing but their next drink/fix.

PS. I know they are not all the same but the scum do seem to prevail now.

lasted longer than i expected...... not surprised at all location sucked from the beggining what plans did they have in place to prevent it..... something like the Berlin wall might work complete with snipers and barbed wire nightly patrols every 2 mins...........

You all echo the point I was making to JJ about Wigan Park the other night; why do we bother trying to revamp once lovely places like the park...only to see the yobs destroy it again.
Bring back National Service; apparently, it was quite effective in the fifties and sixties; and it would cut down the dole queues...

I agree in part jarvo, but when was the Boer War statue vandalised?

Why this sculpture has been taken beggars belief. I can understand the plant pots on the park steps and other stuff with an ornamental value getting stolen, but a fibreglass model of pit woman?

Surely the thieves can't have thought it could be weighed-in?

That's really sad.
Of the two I've seen - the mill worker being the other one - I really loved the boat builder.

It was set against side of The Trencherfield Mill building where at least twenty of the glass panels in the lower windows have been smashed for ages - that said it all about its safety.

What a crying shame. They were fantastic too. The buggers need their hands chopping off.

That's £18,000 of the £36,000 gone in a very short time.
They (WMBC) said they were very securely anchored, I suppose to the ones who planned 'em, that means one elbow on t'bar..

The stocks would soon get vandalised by the human rights lot.

Does the cost of these statues include moulds? If so it shouldn't be too much trouble to re-make the images.

If the figures are "flimsy" enough to be snapped apart they should be internally strengthened, or placed somewhere safer.

Somewhere I read of a explosive going off and spraying the thief with paint that will not wash off, if taken ,put it down to a senior moment now i remember isnt it when they steal Bank Notes they explode, I know someone will remember better than me how it works , couldn't that be put in the statues and only the owners will know

Seeng they're made from Fibreglass, they could have filled 'em with concrete. That would have made the thieves work harder & been more secure
