XRH59:
If this is very recent - too much open or running in the background - memory - could be a virus if downloading software from other sites such as - Games & Screen Savers they are notorious for this.

Go onto the web - download free scanner - some of these will not allow you to correct the faults - but they will give you pointers - let me know how you get on

Jacko,not downloaded anything for ages,
i have run a scan and it gave a list
saying that the cookies are infected
if you know what that means.

Go to the control panel - open up Internet Options - In the section General - you should see Browsing History -along with a DELETE button - pressing that will delete ALL COOKIES.

Cookies come into your PC whenever you go onto the Internet - including this site - they are responsible for most of the SPAM that comes into our PC's - NEVER open any of these especially if you dont know the source - they also contain harmfull viruses
Let me know how you get on.

Or, set PC not to accept cookies, much easier

Suit
The COOKIES have infected his PC and are already in the PC - he needs to get rid of those - now - your advice - I also agree - comes after.

Cookies are not 'infected', his AV has identified them as hazourdous (ie they pass info back too where they come from). If web is slow, he probably has an app (ie a disk scan) going on, or, if using an un-protected wireless, someone maybe 'piggy-backing', robbing some of the bandwidth

XRH59.

Getting rid of Cookies doesnt do any harm - frequently I clean the cookies out - I receive one hell of a lot of unsolicited emails -

Please let me know how you get on.

Jack

alternatively download CCleaner (Crapcleaner) from www.ccleaner.com also try Spybot - Search & Destroy from www.spybot.com both these programs are free and are very good at finding things on your computer that shouldnt be there

last thing he needs to do is download 'freebies'. They are free for 2 reasons: -

1 - Contain spyware
2 - Commercial - Either you get annoyed to buy, or your email is sold to other companies for THEM to annoy you, sheesh !

hm well I run AVG thats FREE
I also run adaware thats FREE

Mr Mannerin, have you done the basics, disc clean up and defrag etc. If so download adaware free version and let that run and take out any crap.Give the vents around your pc a good hoovering too (no one ever does this!! causes em to overheat if its dusty)
If prob persisting your welcome to drop it down here and me n other half can sort it for you.I'm self taught he's a pro, make a good team between us lol.
There is a programme called hijack which scans your pc for anything nasty thats crept in and is running in the backround, I can also give you a link to folks who can help you with this.

There is a pc advice group on msn called Community Feedback, it was set up for forums and chatrooms, but it tends to deal mainly with tech help now....and thats FREE too lol.
http://groups.msn.com/communityfeedback

guys and girls in there are really good.

Mr Mannerin I know this sounds daft ......but put your ear near the tower, is it louder than usual? Cos fans get clogged and wear out, when they do and the tower gets warm the pc slows down, eventually they start crashing.

Empress, yes it does sound louder than normal.

Hiya Mr mannerin....is the fan at the back working ok? Have a listen, also theres a smaller one in the middle that cools down the processor. Check your vents are free of dust. Tomorrow unplug everything and take off the sides, and give it a good BUT CAREFUL clean inside, I use me hoover lol wipe over the fans gently with a cotton bud, or something while your at it.They pull in a lot of dust, cigarette smoke etc.I clean mine out every few months as it pulls in smut from the woodburner. If it starts to intermittent click at all its on its way out , so you'd need to back up anything important and get your pics off.

empress aint no dummy. she has the best cleaner out at the moment..i refer to AVG. since i installed it, i havent had any probs. you dont have to do nothing, its geared to check out and clean all garbage from your pute. its the best, and you will find a massive diff with the pute. i also have another one installed, called ad adware.your pute needs a good houseclean xr, its crazy the crap you pick up. even these pop ups giving you a checkout on the pute carry viruses. so yeah, you definately need a cleaner.

Hiya Billy AVG is fantastic eh, and adaware.I took norton off my pc after it let a worm in. I also use a site called trend micro now and again and pop on there for the latest news on viruses etc to watch out for. You can do a free scan on there too. They monitor viruses and how they spread, hence the scan is free.

Getwom you beat me to it The /f parameter can only be used on a drive that isn't in use by Windows though. If you try to run chkdsk/f from Windows on the drive that Windows is on you will be told that it can't run now and you will be asked if you want it to run the next time you reboot the PC.

Greyhound, could you try pressing the CONTROL ALT & DELETE keys together to bring up the Task Manager, clicking on to the Processes tab and looking for chkdsk in the Image Name column.
If it is there right click on it and select End Process from the menu, then try to do a Defrag again.

xrh59, what antivirus, antispyware, and firewall have you got?
AVG is very good but you will make work for yourself trying to run it alongside another antivirus programe. The same applies for a firewall, only one is needed. Antispyware programs are diferent if you are using the free "cleaners", you'll usualy need at least 2 to get rid of everything.

I think your best place to start would be to run the Full Service Scan from the Windows Live OneCare page.
