i remember Z Bars. they were just blocks of caramel (extremely bad for the teeth because it was hard caramel and you had to really really tug at it) but one used to last me ages. I also remember the liquorice that was like a twig and used to break into threads as you chewed it (just like a real twig).

And what about Bassetts Liquorice Allsorts, and what was your favourite? Mine was the coconut ring.
Someone mentioning "old" sweets reminded me of a little shop on Pall Mall in Chorley, where just after the war when chocolate was in short supply you could buy some of his old stock he had on display in his window and despite the lack of direct sunlight the chocolate was white. With todays "best before" or "use by dates" he wouldn't get away with it but those were desperate days.

Also: Can't believe that no one has mentioned Aztec Bars! They were around for a short period in the 70s. Think Mars made them. They were a bit like Milky Ways but were larger and more chewy. Think they contained raisins. Purple wrapper.

My favourite sweet shop used to be on Mesnes Road, where Diana Louise hairdressers is now. My little brother and I used to be taken there on a Friday night for a treat to buy some sweets, usualy Fry's Chocolate Cream bar or a sherbert dip - can't remember the name of the shop but it was owned and run by a nice old man. Another favourite was Sharrocks in Queensway and the one opposite Mab's Cross School - if you weren't too greedy a Jubliee bought there after school could last all the way to Danesway on the walk home. Curly Wurly bars seemed to be absolutely ginormous - not now in the days of Americanised buckets of popcorn and supersized Mars bars etc. but in the early '70s they were HUGE!

Am I bucking the trend here - I really hated cherry lips, pear drops, parma violets and all sweets that depended on aldehydes for their flavourings - way too false - sorry to upset all you nostalgia junkies! Can't beat a good suck on Uncle Joes.

Here... jumping back to the 'Germoline Bubbly'

I remember some daft buggers at school sticking the tattoos on their tongues and ending up with 'em turning blue and yellow.

Why?

The mystery and idiocy of youth!

I never did - but I did like the taste of the bubblegum though!!!

I can sympathise Flockhound. We now have a Treats from Home shop in Melbourne and it has put a serious dent in my bank account. We also have the Old Time Lolly Store which sells a similar range of treats well. The Chocolate Box occasionally has Uncle Joes Mint Balls and David Jones sells Thornton's Fudge. Oh the temptation!!!!

Germoline bubblies were a wierd tasting bubble gum, and you got a transfer inside with a smiley happy face on it, going of the taste and tattoo that came with it, it was probably and experimental drug used on kids in the 80`s

Chewbaxter, replying from your earlier message, i do remember 'cabana bars'. They were cherry and coconut flavoured and i loved them. Germoline bubblies with the tattoo that everyone stuck on their tongues. I remember all the sweets mentioned on here.
Spangles, pink panther bars, wham bars, stardust.
No one has mentioned pacers, which were mint flavoured and im sure had green stripes on them.
The 'milk tray in a bar' keeps getting a mention. But wasn't that a 'Frys' product.Like a Frys bar but each piece had a different flavour in it?
I bet we were all hyperactive has children. All those colourings. No wonder i couldn't sleep at night.
