Wigan’s Telly Mentions

Started by: jo anne (34721)

After Life, Season 2 is now on Netflix (Wiki), & in it there’s a scene where central character Tony - Ricky Gervais - is Ricky being typical Ricky really. (Well, he has written it. I do like him)

Tony is expressing his cynicism of horoscopes and makes a point about their vagueness:

“I want to see one that says ‘Happy Birthday, Rita Wainthropp of 7 Acacia Drive, Wigan. You’re going to get fired from your job today ‘cause everyone hates you and the boss thinks you’re a slut’. Then I’d believe it.”

I wonder if Rita is a Wiganworld reader or member even.

On checking, Acacia Drive doesn’t seem to be a Wigan Street,
so it could just be Acacia name & address being made up.

I went to the Imperial War Museum in London and there was a mock up of soldiers living in the trenches in WW1.A sargeant asks a a lad "where you from lad,"Wigan replies the lad."Good rugby team" says the sargeant.I know it was not on the tv but how many people from around the world must have heard it.

The London Missionary Society send missionaries across India, the Pacific and Africa - including the famous Dr David Livingstone. It had a branch in the north of England, the "Wigan Auxilliary", hence Reverend Belcher preaches under a banner of the Wigan Missionary society.

Carry On Up The Khyber.

I’m just watching the film and Patti (Nicole) says:

“Did you know … Warrington was famous for vodka?”

And Eric (Colin) goes on to tell her:

That explains why he is buried in Warrington, I never knew it was his birthplace.

The woman who wrote 'Oranges Are Not The only Fruit' (Jeanette Winterson) wrote in one of her books in 2011, that her mother had been sent to do missionary work in Wigan!
