Wine

Started by: priscus (inactive)

I have mentioned on a previous thread that my alcohol consumption has risen. (I have to keep a record, 'cause of health reasons)

On TV just it said UK wine consumption has increased by more than 500%.

UK consumption of alcohol had been falling progressively for quite some time. In our current circumstances, this trend seems to have reversed.

I can understand why people are drinking more.

But why has wine consumption in particular increased, at more than twice the rate of other tipples?

A good question, Priscus. I’m not a drinker but could it be due to differences in availability?

I don't know, jo anne. My first shop under the lockdown conditions was at a Tesco superstore. It has a massive drinks section.

Normally, they have six varieties of Chianti, and I buy the cheapest, knowing from experience it is the best for cooking. I will pay more for tuthers when it is not available.

On that occasion, (about 20 days ago) the wine shelves were almost stripped bare. But also, so where the lager shelves!

Stocks of spirits seemed to be holding up though.

Jo Anne is the exception to the rule priscus because far more women now drink at home with wine the preferred tipple hence the increased figures.
I've just put out my brown booze bin for collection and it's much heavier than usual. I assume the neighbours have been using it

i-spy, I guess you know a more refined class of fem than do I.

The lot I know, (at least those who drink) seem to be spirits, esp vodka and lager consumers.

A lot of tinned beers taste like nothing but chemicals and not every one likes gin whiskey etc so wine drinking is the easy option. When I go out for a drink I drink Bitter but when I am at home I drink Tyskie a polish lager because most of the tinned bitters are crap.

I don't drink wine, prefer a good gin to anything. Tanqueray Rangpur is my tipple of choice at the moment, in moderation of course.

I can drink and enjoy almost everything but red rum. A bad memory

I like red rum! We always get a couple of bottles of Havana Club 7 when in Mora. It's a lot cheaper there!

I have to say most embarrassingly, my alcohol consumption has gone up.
I’ve had to stop drinking beer, I just can’t hold the volume these days, I’m 73.
I drink home brew wine which I make from a grape concentrate kit.
The cost of the kit is just over £32 plus a little winemaking sugar to raise the abv gravity a little.
I get around 16 to 17 litres at a cost of about £35, so quite good value.
‘Spitting Feathers’ in Bolton is a good shop to go to, but I expect he’ll be shut in the current crisis.
I’m panicking here as to what I’ll do when my current stock runs out!!!!!! LOL

raymyjamie this made me chuckle from Facebook.

The bin man stuck a leaflet for AA on my brown bin.
Judgemental fool, mind your own business.

“Judgemental fool, mind your own business.”

LOL!!!!!!
Absolutely Angel, people should have the freedom to make their own decisions on
how much they drink.

Most people will drink responsibly within government guidelines, I unfortunably DO NOT LOL!!!!!!!, but I am mindful of not getting hammered every night and tend to have a fixed a mount which I stick to.

Angel, I envy you, I don’t sleep very well, and having a little slurp just before bedtime gets me off and sleeping like a lickle babby LOL

I spy / Tinker,
I have never heard of Red Rum. I googled it and, after wading through all the Grand National data, I found it. Will look out for it when I next visit the Liquor Store.

Angel, blimey O Riley, that’s a seriously busy week.
If I was doing those hours I would be fully wired up.

I was on a contract in 1981 and we worked 6-9 x 5 and 6-6 x 2 for six weeks and five weekends at a time. And a good time was had by all.
