Fri 21st, Sat 22nd & Sun 23rd Sep at St Michael’s Church, Duke St, Swinley WN1 2BJ
St Michael’s are hosting their patronal festival on the theme of Wigan’s amazing mining history.
The church will be open on Fri 21st and Sat 22nd Sep all day. Throughout the weekend you can look at all the artefacts, maps, pictures and much more, and refreshments will be served.
* The weekend’s highlight is on Sunday 23rd Sep, 2pm - 4pm *
At 2pm, Wigan rugby legend Billy Boston will be presented with a model of his statue which stands in Believe Square. There will be short speeches from David Molyneux, the Leader of the Council, Stan Higginson, the Vicar of St Michael’s, Rita Culshaw, one of the last remaining pit brow lasses, and Alan Davies, author and ex-miner, who will outline the history of mining in the area. Steve Winterburn, the sculptor of both the Billy Boston statue and the WHAMM mining monument, will be around to talk about the design and the ideas behind this memorial. There will be refreshments and Ken Scally and Michael Winstanley will be entertaining us with music.
Families are welcome to all events, as there will be something for everyone!
