I did once, with four others from my primary school class. We just skipped off at school dinner time, and went for a walk along side the railway line for the afternoon.

I still can't decide whether teacher was too dim to realise afternoon class was far smaller than it had been at start of school day, or relieved to have five less of us to be responsible for.

It was a regular thing for the other four, but I only joined on the one occasion.

I did it when Wigan played Leeds in a R.L. cup replay one Wednesday afternoon, after drawing at Leeds the previous Saturday. Must have been early 1960's. I remember Eric Ashton got sent off. I forged a note from my mum saying I was sick. I think half the school was there and for one minute I don't think I fooled anyone with the letter

I was certainly there. I think Ashton got sent off with Fairbank the Leeds forward. Bill Sayer had been sent off in the 5-5 draw the previous Saturday. Wigan won the replay comfortably.

Just checked and the date was 15th February 1961 Wigan won the replay 32-7 after drawing at Leeds 5-5 The next round they beat Wakefield 2-0 at Wakefield.
Was this the game they were filming THIS SPORTING LIFE? I can remember I was behind the goal and they kept filming a try being scored, by Richard Harris. But thinking about the game again I think Wigan lost, so it was probably the year after?

1961. I would still be at junior school. Maybe they weren’t as strict regarding time off.

One ruse which I can recall, was to conceal yourself somewhere, (stationary cupboard was popular) then, after register, when teacher and pupils trouped off to assembly, whilst they were praising the Lord and singing their alleluias, you could slope off unmolested to a day of freedom.
