There’s a feature about the film on tonight’s BBC North West Tonight - on BBC1 now (6.30-7pm).

SoniaB, I visited the People’s Museum recently due to your post, it’s an interesting place.

Although I did learn about it at school, it was merely from texts, since I did 'O' level Economic History.

Looking back, as an adult, I am rather shocked that teachers made no attempt to bring to our attention just HOW local the background history was: Chequerbent Colliery and all that.

And, not long after this, an ordinance survey was performed of the whole country, so that artillery could drop fire on ANY location given only a verbal description or place name of the location they wished to target!

Clearly, the political chill brought about by the French Revolution, if Napoleon B had invaded this country and won, was he all that bad?

Dave, Yes, I had never looked at it that way, but the response of the English nobs to the brandished severed heads during the 'Reign of Terror' in Paris must have evoked something like what we have more recently experienced with the likes of 'Jihadi John'

Wasn't there a move to have one of Manchester's Railway Stations renamed 'Peterloo' in commemoration? Did it come to nothing then?

It is (was) SAINT PETER'S FIELD.

The name 'Peterloo' refers exclusively to the massacre, being coined to echo Waterloo which has occurred just four years earlier.

Bit like what happened with Watergate spawning the naming of other events to be ______gate.

The site is now occupied by Manchester Central Library: Saint Peter's Square and adjacent Peter Street.

The Fiends Meeting House, mentioned in the contemporaneous account, where the wounded were tended is still there. (Mount Street) Though the 1795 building was replaced by the present structure in 1828.

Don't know when the original St. Peter's Church building disappeared, but it sort of still exists, now a little further South on Oxford Road, serving the Universities.

Marie: No. It happened. Innocent miners were brutally attacked by Wigan coppers. A battle ensued, but the coppers beat them to an inch of their lives.

There is a photo on WW of one of the bully coppers somewhere.

It happened during strike action.
