Parkin

Started by: priscus (inactive)

Is it going out of fashion?

Don't usually eat cake, but, in 1970's, when I returned to North of England, I fell in love with parkin all over again.

So, at this time of year, parkin was one of those traditions which I had held on to.

Out shopping just, my flabber was totally ghasted: first three shops told me they had never heard of it! Fortunately got some at fourth attempt.

Will have to give Delia's recipe a whirl and have a go making some when I get time.

My grandmother supervised school meals back in the early fifties.
She made the most amazing Parkin ever. It was full of walnuts too.
I don't think that was ever a pudding on school meals.
Just a fantastic treat for her grandchildren. I think the reason it's not commonly on sale in bakers or supermarkets is because it's expensive to produce, if done properly.

A meat and potato pie doesn't have mushrooms in it.

I've heard the correct terminology is now, potato and meat pie, owing to more potato than meat contained in pie.

Just bought some Parlin from Asda. Not a patch on home made. It was only £1 so I'm not surprised it was crap. Supermarket cake are rubbish.
