Over several sites, including the Waterside Inn, the Turnpike Gallery & Leigh Spinners Mill.

Boat trips, free canoe taster sessions, canal art, willow weaving, beer festival & stalls to enjoy.

Leigh Spinners Mill are holding two open days: www.heritageopendays.org.uk

Sat 9 Sep and Sun 10 Sep, 10am - 4pm

'Our main attraction is our steam engine, the largest of its type in the world and currently nearing operation. This will be supplemented this year by the opening of our Scutching Room which will feature our collection of textile machinery, steam driven models and other local artefacts.'

FB: "We are doubling our space and will soon have our own Heritage Centre as large as Wigan's History Shop. We will have many interesting historical artefacts and if you want to learn about Leigh's history come to see us over the coming weekend. It is free entry for now but we will be charging in the future."


Women's Work, a play about the female workers at The Spinners Mill during WW1, will be on:

• Friday 8th Sept at 3pm at The Spinners Mill (invitation only)
• Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th Sept at 2pm at The Bridge Cafe

Free performances with a collection box for SAAFA who support veterans & their families (FB)

I did the Parish Church Tower Tour a few years ago and it was brilliant. (The only drawback is accessibility as there are narrow stone steps to climb.)

I've been to the Festival but the canal was short of George.

A shame as not well attended whilst I was there, but the weather worked against them today. The canal through Leigh is a great place to explore; shortly on from King St Bridge is where the Leigh Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal joins the Bridgewater Canal which goes on to Manchester.
