Grids
Why don't the council call them what everybody calls them, which is 'Grids' as in "Grids blocked again, with water everywhere, call council to get it unblocked"
Gullies ....
Who calls them Gullies in Wigan, when they are grids, not gullies ....

A Grid is definately not a Gully. One comes before the other.
If a Gully is blocked, the council would be wrong to say "t'grid's blocked again". Likewise, if a Grid is blocked, it would be unnecessary to send a Gully-Sucker!
This is a Grid
and
This is a Golly !

Exactly!
If a grid is blocked a stick or a hand can unblock it, if a Gully is blocked yoo need one of those big suckers to unblock it

a gully is a 'U' shaped trap, the Yoooo shape stops the smell coming from the sewer pipe, the grid is the iron cover which stops people falling in,
the cleaner cleans the gully of all deposits what fall in, the grid dos't need cleaning,
edyooocation is a wonderful thing
