Isn't there a danger of your DNA being passed onto third parties?

my DNA came back pure irish...on my fathers side....my deceased daughter was not too happy about this cos on her mothers side they were all danes and dutch, hence the seafaring side in my genes......I was only to happy she didn't find anyone hanging from a b****y tree

Billy,I would love to know..as far as I know my surname is Irish..Grandma
came from there during the potato famine...but..I believe there's a lot of my surname, which is McGovern live in,believe it or not,South America of all
places..the mind boggles.

I must add Billy, that my Grandmas name was Kinnane and of course my
Grandad was McGovern, but I never really found out his heritage..the
questions that I should have asked..but too late now unfortunately.

Maureen, it's really interesting doing your family tree. You can do it free in the History Shop in Library St. They are very helpful. I did mine back to 1800 in Ireland in the potato famine when they came over here. They must have been brave. I said how did they get from Liverpool to Wigan and Bernard in Australia said they would have got lifts on horse and carts. I think the majority of Wallgate was from County Clare.

momac, I Googled my surname, and we too apparently originated from Ireland, loads of folk in America were listed and the majority were black folks, yes the mind boggles.

Marie,if I had ten 10p for every time I said I was going down to the history
shop I would be wealthy..I really must shape myself and go down there.

Ayrefield..wouldn't it be brilliant if we knew everybody under our family name.

momac it's not cheap. I've been wanting to do it for ages but my sons clubbed together for my birthday treat! I think about £80. Ancestry sent me an email today with a 20%off offer on. I have Irish on both sides from the famine years so I knew there would be a good percentage. Go to the History shop on Mon pm and they do genealogy help then. Peter P I don't know how it all works but sires like Ancestry explain it and there are videos too on youtube I think.
dave I don't know about DNA being passed on to third parties, I think Ancestry say they don't . but who would want to know and why?

Thank you Kath for your reply..and information,as I said I will have to get
there and find some more info on my Grandparents...isn't it a pity you can't
put an old head on young shoulders..the times I've come home from School
and gone straight to my Grandmas, who lived at the top of our street..until
my Mam came home from work..I could have been asking her all about her
childhood in County Clare..where she met my Grandad etc...we only realise
as we grow older don't we.

Kath,I think what Billy s doing is highlighting the importance of DNA..in that if it wasn't for DNA there would be a lot more murderers walking the streets...it
was a godsend when it was discovered for many reasons..
You've got a very interesting background Kath..a bit of everything.

Its all about reliability

What is stopping me from setting up my own DNA analysis company in my back room? You could send me samples, but I could just throw them in the bin and send you back a letter saying anything I wanted to and charge £100 a pop! You would be non the wiser. The industry is not regulated and people pray on the gullibility of others. How do we know that is not what is going on here?

The government and the courts will only recognise results from about a dozen companies and their tests cost a lot more than £80.

Is there any sort of disclaimer in the paperwork? I bet there is.

I would take it all with a pinch of salt

i find Ancestry very good stardelta. all the info comes back via email and onto my Ancestry account to keep. Lots of links with explanatory information, My closest link they found is a third cousin who's grandfather is my grandma's brother. Other matches show all surnames on their family tree and you can see the trees and contact people.I have found that I have genetic links to melbourne in Australia. My great uncle emigrated there. I always wondered if I had relatives there.

I have no doubts whatsoever of the accuracy and importance of DNA testing,

My point, which seems to have been missed is this......

Can you realistically expect the results of a £50 mail order test conducted by an anonymous and unregulated source to be as accurate and as reliable as one conducted by a home office approved forensic lab and their strict procedures.....I think not.

As for learning something new, and sorry to have to say it but at an early age I learnt that a fool and his money are swiftly parted
