2040

Started by: GOLDEN BEAR (6555)

Well i thought i had heard everything that was until the announcement by this government the other day. They have come up with the idea of scrapping ALL petrol and diesel cars by that date (title) 2040. At the first instance i actually thought it was APRIL 1st, but after checking the calendar no it was showing JULY.
This is some thing akin to the "new pound" but on a GIGANTIC SCALE. OK i know it is 23 years into the future ,but seriously to quote john mcenroe ," YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS"
One does not have to have an Einstein to imagine the huge complications involved? If any of you have ever driven our M6/62 /25 /1/ then you will have noticed the vast amount of Car's /H.G.V.s/ Saloon Coache's etc .
Now we all have electric car's and we have to pull into the service's to re-plug or re-charge ,can you imagine for one blinding billionth of a second just how chaotic that would be??? and just what would the cost of a "fill up" be?????? At my age approaching 70 i am beginning to realize that this countries leader's are in actual fact

" STARK RAVING MAD,INSANE LOOPY NUTCASE'S &IDIOT'S"
I rest my case folk's ,have a nice day!

GB,I am nearly 70 as well, just think about the changes we have seen in our lifetime. It does seem hard to grasp but technology will change and I have no doubt electric vehicles will one day be common place.Never say never.

GB.....there are NO plans to SCRAP ALL petrol/diesel vehicles by 2040. Please read the proposals for that time carefully.

I think long before 2040 all vehicles will have to be 'hybrid' vehicles, running on both fossil fuel and electricity and I think a lot of this depends on how electric 'storage' technology progresses over the next 23 years, hydrogen cell technology seemed to be the way forward, but that seems to have stalled lately, present electricity storage in the form of batteries, will not do the job and I would imagine that hybrid vehicles will be required to run on electricity only, in towns and cities to cut down on pollution and the petrol or even LPG powered engines will be used to drive the vehicles out of town on motorways etc and on about where to charge the vehicles, as in points in streets, they could be installed in the same way that cable TV was installed in the early 1990's as in the government just decide to do it and technology exists were wireless charging is possible, as in you park your vehicle over a certain charging point in the street and the vehicle is charged using some sort of inductive process.

I think it is a good idea and eventually when technology allows, all vehicles will be powered by electricity

The car manufactures are already on to it,and I believe it won't be long before the electric car will be powered by a battery which will be small enough to just exchange for a charged one,and still do a decent mileage, easier than a petrol fill up,battery technology is amazing.TTS you beat me to it

Spud.... I did read about that solution several years ago. Go to a 'filling' station and exchange batteries, there would have to be major developments to battery technology to allow for that process to materialise.

You can always have a long extension lead on your car

No VED and a huge reduction in petrol and diesel sales and consequently fuel duty?

First question to ask is what are the government going to do to fill the £40bn shaped hole (and thats at today's rates) they are going to be left with?

Toyota led the field with experimental Hybrid battery technology 20 odd years ago, they perfected it and Hybrid cars have been driven in Japan for many years. Gove is once again trying to make a name for himself has he tried to do with education where he failed miserably, he'll fail yet again with this, as even the power suppliers have said there just isn't the capacity of supply to charge the vast amount of electric vehicles that is planned, and we would need ten nuclear power stations built to cope with demand, time to get your Gove Must Go badges out again.

The mining for Cobalt though is reminiscent of how the mining for asbestos was with total disregard by manufacturers for the costs in human suffering.
