Salads

Started by: priscus (inactive)

This time of year.

Hot days.

Good excuse for not cooking.

All you five a day in a single meal.

What's not to like about it?

One of our favourite ingredients in a salad is grated carrot 🥕 with sunflower 🌻 seeds and mayonnaise.

I liked mixed seeds, lightly roasted, in my salad, with a French dressing.

Walshy try making your own. A salad is about the only thing The Mount can't either burn or ruin. The food is absolutely foul there.

Disgusting
Generally unpleasant miserable staff, sticky dirty tables, not just one but all of them, dirty scruffy cutlery once again not just one but all, god only knows what the kitchens were like, breakfast a plate of grease, Stay and eat here at your peril.

Sounds like it's right up your street Baz.

But then again, I suppose you probably don't no any better.

It's always been a dirty hole, in the early 1970s I was given beer in a handled pint glass that was coated with thick liquid soap, luckily I noticed it before having a drink of it, apparently so the bar staff said; it was the glass they filled the soap dispenser of the washer with and should never have been used and blamed new staff - I never went back there. Like nanajacqui says - dirty buggers!

when I went to America (South Carolina)where the salads were wonderful, I now struggle with salads here. I don't know why they should be so different but they are poles apart.
Any suggestions how to make them more tasty

Iceberg Lettuce; Tomatoes; grated cheddar cheese.

Chop the lettuce in a large salad bowl and slice the tomatoes mixing them together. Grate the cheddar cheese over the mix. Add salt and pepper seasoning and pour on any dressing - Asda salad cream is nice.

Chill and serve with anything you fancy.

Easy.

Beryl, Gooogle up some recipes, and see what options have some appeal to you. There are just such huge variations on the theme, and only you really know your tastes.

I like to chop my own coleslaw:

White cabbage
Onion
Bramley
English mustard
White wine
White wine vinegar
Safflower oil (which I have been unable to get of late)
Kohlrabi (On those rare occasions when I can get one)

Makes a huge bowl full, and lasts all week.

(EDIT)
Have bought a bottle of grape seed oil (NOT rapeseed) to try a substitute, next chop.

iceberg lettuce is tasteless and like eating crunchy water. I prefer those bags with spinach and rocket in etc.

I like to add a nice sliced Pink Lady apple, chopped grapes, a good dollop of coleslaw, fresh crusty bread and butter, and myself, I like some kind of flavoured cook rice served ice cold. Can't beat it!

What about dressings?

Anyone have any outstanding recommendations?

Did begin to make my own to keep down the calories. Bought cheap off eBay, a device consisting of a battery powered emulsifier, which is detached from the container of finished product and replaced with top designed to disperse content over salad.

That said, I usually have plain Salad Cream, which I prefer to Mayonnaise.

How say you?

Thanks guys shall try some ideas.
When in Charleston we went to a Bubba Gump restaurant and one of the ingredients on the salad was really fresh walnuts chopped and pan fried in honey and sprinkled over gorgeous none of the bitterness we get with walnuts here,

priscus,
Was in the Farmers Market earlier and saw Kohlrabi set out for free samples. Didn't taste of anything to me I'm afraid. Not as good as the free samples of donuts.

Not a strong flavour, agree. The other cabbage family root crops are a bit sharp though to use raw in a slaw. The other ingredients benefit from toning down a bit with addition of kohlrabi, but usually I don't include one as I rarely find them in greengrocers.
