The Wigan Six Road Race...
Started by: jarvo (28087)  Report abuse
Does anyone remember the 'Wigan Six'?

It started from the market square and went up Wigan Lane; it turned at the Cherry Gardens and went back down Kenyon Road to the market square. It was a two lap race, and finished coming off Market Street to finish by the bus station.

Apparently, it was a gruelling road race with the steady incline of Wigan Lane.

Although I didn't take part in those early races (1974 - 1977), many runners said it was toughest road race in the North West at that time.

I'm sure Brendan Foster did it one year...

Anybody with any info on this?

Thanks.

Just heard from Chorley Harriers vet, Charlie Stewart that Foster did run in the 1975 race. He used it as a training jog and finished 7th.

Cheers, Charles.
