popped in this afternoon and I swear the place was bustling. There's a magician and Xmas show for kids Saturday afternoon. Can't wait

They put some decorations yesterday, but the place is still filthy, I was walking through there today and I thought 'Yoo Can't Polish A Turd'

Went to Wigan this morning and it is so depressing in the Market Hall so different at this time years ago. All those butchers shops and turkeys with a brown label with the customers name and all waiting for collection. No Bernard Matthews then.

Compared with the old one it's like the Ritz

The old one was built in 1877 and by the early 1980's it was getting past it's it's sell by date (over a 100 years old) the present Market Hall was opened in January 1987 and in 2006 in the council's opinion and to quote the then Market Hall manager, who said to me that "It's getting tired" and he told me that the council wanted to flatten the bottom end of The Galleries and start again, as part of the Northern Crescent proposals for that part of Wigan, that was less than 20 years after it was built, which is pretty lousy longevity for a building isn't it ....

Can't argue with that. But I've found the traders to be a fine bunch of folk trying to earn a living. They deserve more support than they get.
I can do my shopping, stop for a chat or two, get hair cut thanks to father Brown and be on my way home in under an hour. Beats queuing in Tesco

I travel from Preston every few weeks to buy bacon 🥓 and tomato 🍅 sausages, and of course a pork pie with jelly. Don't know the name of the butchers shop but I'll miss it when it's gone.

I have no problem with the traders in there, it is just the way ......

It was designed.

It was built.

Where it was built.

How it is run (no Sunday opening, filthy, neglected etc)

The scandalous and insane amount of rent charged to stall holders, which will ultimately be catastrophic in leading to the closure of the Market Hall.

In the Market Hall bogs last week I was having a pee and I said to one normally cheery stall holder "awreet" and she replied "no not really"

The place is a dump ...

I think market halls should be supported as much as possible, they are a British tradition like the pubs. Okay I know a lot of things could be of a better quality, clothes etc. but we should buy what we can from them. Markets have soul, history and a personality. We went to Leigh last week and the market hall was buzzing, Bury has a great market too. The new shopping centres are all well and good, but they all feel, and look the same. Like the British pub, markets should keep their place in the towns and cities of our country.
