Great programme. Like Frank Skinner said, George was a genius ukulele player, but he made it look so easy. He really must have cheered people up during the War years. What a shame he died so young.

I remember him from about 1961, he was sat in an armchair in what was then the ABC TV studios, he was on for a few minutes before one of his films started.

Enjoyed the programme. Would have been nice if the clip of Frank Skinner at the Statue was not put on the editing floor.

Tomplum, George Formby was born in Wigan, lived for a short while in Hindley but never lived in Warrington.

Good programme, but very disapointing that there was no mention of him being born in Wigan.

No showing of the plaque on the wall adjacent to Central Park Way or his statue in the Grand Arcade.

In the 1930's and 1940's, Formby was of the highest paid entertainers in this country and Wigan should be proud that he was born here.

It WAS mentioned that he was born in Wigan .....

The reason that the statue in the Grand Arcade wasn't shown in the program was because it just looks {STUPID} where it is in the Grand Arcade, in fact it shouldn't be in the Grand Arcade in the first place, because the Grand Arcade and George Formby just don't go together and the statue is too small, it makes George Formby look like a dwarf

Sorry, must have missed that tiny bit!

As for the statue being small, I agree with you, but camera's can work tricks.

Perhaps you can suggest a better place for it?

Stoo
The statue in the Grand Arcade is life size, so it is relevant it is the size that it is. On the issue of the statue should not be in the GA it was the only place that we could find as Lord Cllr Peter Smith, leader of the Council, said that it would be over his dead body that Wigan would ever get a statue of George Formby. Iguess we now know where he will be buried. But I noticed in on of the Brigter Borough he was talking positively about George Formby and the Statue in the Council Borough Life magazine, so he must now see the positives that the statue brings.

Joseph like it. Stoo GF was 5 foot 8. Yes had it confirmed by chairman of GF society. I guess you'll be running to the GA with your tape measure Stoo.

Second point did the leader of the Council say over my dead body on a statue how many statements from cclrs and minutes do you want?

Thats the only two points I have said on this thread. Let me know which others you want to prove what I have said.

Seriously you might not like the opinbion I have but to say it all rubbish is nonesense.

Gareth. That's the George Formby Statue in the Isle of Man, the real George Formby and the George Formby Statue in Wigan. Study them carefully, then admit the one in Wigan is rubbish!

PS: I'm sorry. I was wrong to say it's 'rubbish'. What I should have said was "the one in Wigan looks nothing like him"!

Cliff Richard was born in Lucknow, India, but he isn't ragarded as a Lucknow singer and performer, is he?

George Formby was born in Wigan but started, and continued, his entertaining career from Stockton Heath, Cheshire.
