dougie

Would those photos been taken towards the very end of the 1970's I say that looking at a couple of the cars and the look of Wigan, shops, street furniture and road signs etc

If you look at Wigan then in those pictures, just prior to the recession of the 1980's and then look at a similar set of pictures taken in the early 1980's at the height of Maggie Thatcher’s recession you can see a big difference in the place, with closed down shops and more litter on the streets etc the place looked a lot rougher in the early 1980's

Ecellent pics! When the town was a real, individual town, with proper streets and shops and no pointless shopping arcades...

The building on the corner of Library Street - The Moon Under Water - was Halifax in the late '70s, in the early '70s it was Civic Stores, before that it was Broadmeads.

I like the photo of the bottom of Makinsons arcade looking across to the outside market. Would have loved to see a photo the other way looking down to the old BHS as I am always trying to remember the shops down there.

dougie, your pictures show just how quick change can be and it seems more so than ever these days.In my lifetime I have seen buildings put up and the same buildings demolished. They don't build 'em like they used to.

Thank you we are so lucky you decided to take these photos that Sunday morning. I feel very nostalgic. They have torn the heart out of the town. I don't live in Wigan anymore but I would shoot the town Planners. every time I visit something else has gone to be replcaed by more roads and ugly buildings.

Chrisnich if you stood at the bottom of the arcade facing the market and then looked to your right there used to be Open fish stalls and the B H Stores , and to the left passed the old Arcade as far as I can remember there were offices of Solicitors ,and then Conroys , and I think on the corner a Sweet shop
Rumbelows used to be in the 40/50s Nimans Jewellry shop they also had a smaller shop nearly opposite the The pub cannot remember the name of it but the boys Colin and Bill Cook had it . Wonderful pictures congratulations on recording the old town for posterity

Thanks for the lovely photos which bring back so many memories. Seeing Woolies just as I remember it....always met my friends in front of Woolies for a night out and then I would catch the No.23 to Worsley Hall just opposite...Best times ever.
When I see photos like this I realise just how lovely some of the buildings were, (although as a teenager in the 60's architecure wasn't something I gave any thought to), but these photos show just how beautiful these buildings were. I left Wigan late 60's but have been back a few times since and have seen the changes to the old town and I have to agree with other readers.... not for the better.
