ok wrong arley hall. I have a friend who lives in Arley lane - just over the bridge going towards Red Rock from Chorley road. Is Arley hall near there?

Art sez - "Arley Hall Wigan, not much difference is there"?

Arley Hall Wigan, my arse!

It's in Greater Manchester, in Bolton Metropolitan Borough, and IN Blackrod. Not Wigan. Teeeeeeeeth!

Arley Hall is much nearer to Wigan than Bowton so the address should be, Arley hall nr Wigan Gt Manc.
A bit like saying, St Helens, nr Wigan, Merseyside,

winder,

Historically Arley Hall has been a part of the Bolton administrative area of Blackrod.
In modern times it has been more associated with Wigan. It now lies inside the Wigan MBC boundary following Boundary Commission changes. If you look at the Wigan council map you will note the Wigan/Bolton border at what was the A6 before the Blackrod by pass was opened.

My reply was meant in jest, Gaffer. It was to get the Border Patroling P.C. Tonker on another rant.

Regardless of the 'postal address', regardless of the 'county', regardless of the 'local authority', regardless of the 'telephone dialling code', Arley Hall is IN Blackrod. That's 'BLACKROD'.

If Chorley council take control of Blackrod, Arley Hall will still be in Blackrod and not Chorley.
Arley Hall is 'nearer' to Standish than Bolton, but it's not in Standish, it's IN Blackrod.

If (when) Arley Hall becomes within Wigan Council's area, it will still be in Blackrod, not Wigan.

As it happens, at the moment, it's in - BOLTON METROPOLITAN BOROUGH .

PS. .. If a wealthy American oil tycoon buys Arley Hall and takes it down, stone by stone, ships it over to the U.S. of A. and rebuilds it in Austin, Texas, then I'm afraid Arley Hall will no longer be IN Blackrod. But, until then, it is!

Art, keep looking.
You'll find that Arley Hall is referred to in everything about Blackrod, NOT Haigh. That's because Arley Hall is in Blackrod and not Haigh.

Like I said earlier - 'Regardless of the 'postal address''.

Borough, Walshy? Not me, Walshy. READ and understand!

Art says Arley Hall is in Haigh. It's not, it's IN Blackrod.

Gaffer says it's in Wigan MBC. It's not, it's in Bolton MBC.

I corrected THEM. YOU stuck your nose in, without reading the thread first.

Typical.

Anyway ... The question was 'WHERE IS Arley Hall'?

NOT 'Which local authority area is Arley Hall in'?

This map is from the series of health walks by Wigan Council. If you are interested in the area have a look at the recommended route and have a walk around.

Google shows Arley Hall (Wigan golf club)on the wrong side of the cut!
We as kids were always told that north of the cut beyond Arley bridge was Adlington/Blackrod and the south was Wigan from the Crawford arms to Arley bridge.
Somewhere beyond Arley bridge on the south side and beyond the reservoirs it definitely becomes Adlington.
