Was Abram Fire Service voluntary? I think I recognise the man on the front row, second from right as my mother's cousin. Harry Crouchley (my godfather), who I think was a joiner. Any way of finding out, please?
This was a voluntary fire service maned by men who could not go to war for one reason or other, i can tell you the man does come from Abram, i wil ask Alan who provided the photo
I think the man sitting 2nd from left was Mr Renshaw,
The AFS was the Auxilliary fire Service, in WW2.
Sattelite stations, dotted around the districts. Usually one appliance, (the Green Goddess), a nissen hut & garage.
We even had one in SLG..;o)
After the war the nissen hut was Crooke Miners Brass Band hut..
Second from left middle row is William (bill) Hoofe who work at the maypole collery during the war and lived at 78 warrington rd
