ADVERT FOR PAINES FIREWORKS 1927

Comment by: Peter Walsh on 11th September 2023 at 07:01

It reminds me of the stall in the Little Arcade that was piled with fireworks. We used to buy the Penny Bangers and cringe now at the dangerous risks we took with them.

I remember that stall too Peter....it wouldn't happen these days as some idiot would deliberately drop in a lighted match! I remember the excitement of the posters in our local newsagents' windows that appeared every year, advertising Brock's or Standard fireworks in glowing Autumn colours, showing smiling children dancing around a bonfire, and we all sang along with "Light up the sky with Standard Fireworks", in those happy far-off days when TV adverts featured light-hearted jingles for washing powder and Murray Mints instead of funeral plans!

Something has been niggling me all day about this post and I couldn't put my finger on it. It's just dawned on me.....the name Pain's fireworks certainly rang a bell from my childhood memories but I seem to remember the name being spelled as "Payne's". However, it's a long time ago and I could be wrong.

I've just Googled it and it IS "Pain's", .....I think I was thinking of Payne's Poppets which were chocolate sweets that came in a little box and were often sold at the sweets kiosk in cinemas.

Irene, initially I was thinking that years ago it was spelled differently, though for some reason I was thinking of a g in the name - Paigns, and I too had to have a Google, have you noticed that Ron too has also spelled it differently and with an e - Paines, in his photo description.
