Of the 22 names inscribed here, two also appear on the plaque at the Mount Zion Chapel on Ormskirk Road - Peter Peet and Richard Speakman. According to Dr Eric McPherson's 'Roll of Honour', the latter was the son of Ethel, and stepson of Michael Kinane. He is buried in an RC section in Wigan Cemetery, and the family's address is given as Chestnut Road, Whelley. St Matthew's commemorated parishioners regardless of creed - so presumably he also had a connection with the Highfield area.
Also, according to McPherson, this is a different Richard Speakman from the man commemorated at the Mount Zion Chapel - he was a Lance Sergeant aged 37 who died in Egypt in 1941. His parents were William and Emma of Goose Green, married to Lilian, of Pemberton.
Both men are also commemorated on the Wigan cenotaph.
