Bryn, Ashton in Makerfield, Wigan, Lancs - Even Levertons weren't sure where they really were.
It would have been their correct address to ensure mail got to them before the postcodes system came into national use as I remember we had to put Near Wigan, though looking at the date, in the 1980s postcodes would have been in use. The dialling code for Ashton was the same area code as Wigan wasn't it, or did the area have its own dialling code at one time?
When we moved into our house we received and sent mail which was Bryn Wigan. After a while we received an official letter to say our postal address was Ashton -in-Makerfield Wigan that was in 1975. I can remember Cat Earth movers going up Bryn Street and just missing the Coop at the junction of Gerard Street. Can remember there were no cabs on the vehicles and the drivers wore flying jackets goggles and leather hats
Cyril. Prior to the introduction of Subscriber Trunk Dialling in
the early/mid 60s, the only areas you could dial from Wigan numbers without going through an operator were Standish and Ashton.
