1976 was a leap year and so at the end of February, frantically searching for something topical to illustrate the fact, I came across a lovely couple of kids in Cowling Street, Poolstock.
With their parents permission I staged this picture of 4 year old Denise Fitzsimmons and 8 year old Andrew Brookwell, with the idea of it being a lady's prerogative to propose in leap years but the young lad steadfastly sticking to his football.
Can I emphasise that all the pictures that I post on here are copyright of the Wigan Observer and thanks to editor Janet Wilson for permission to use.

Poor Denise, the look on Andrew's face says it all.
Lush grass too, it would be all scorched brown with the hot sun and drought a few months later.

Lancashire' or Poolstock Posy? Whichever, my thanks to the late Percy Grainger.
I like Andy's Bumper Boots, and red plastic football with dimples. I had both back in '58, and now I have the low-cut Bumper, and gentle roll towards the shops.
