The front gable on The Shamrock Hotel on Preston Road Standish. The pub was formerly known as 'Ye Old Original Seven Stars Hotel'. I don't know when it changed its name. It stands in the Irish quarter of Standish - nearly opposite the recently demolished 'St Patrick's Hotel', but presumably the change had something to do with the prominent shamrock design in the central terracotta plate.

The Original Seven Stars is farther down Preston Road opposite the Italian that used to be the new Seven Stars. I never knew Standish had a Irish quarter, I thought it was too posh.

Roy has explained the matter on the photo-a-day page. The change of name was in line with the fashion of a few years ago when some pubs changed their official name (often one that people didn't really use) to what was previously the pub's unofficial nickname among the locals. I can think of a few others around Lancashire that did the same thing.

Geoff, the pub you are referring to is The New Seven Stars.
