Down entry to Princess Pictures
Often mis quoted but the cinema was male! It was the Princes not the Princess
Coldest Picture House in Wigan. The Princes, Palace and Empire, cinemas where I never took a 'date'. It was always the RITZ, COUNTY or COURT.
Not forgetting the 'stinky' Pavilion that you had to pinch your nose when walking past!
Veronica yes missed that off the list of 'NO DATES HERE' The Pavillion had a fascinating history It was once upon a time a Circus and a Roller Skating Rink.
Albert The Princes Cinema as was, is now a club.
I believe so Ron re the skating rink and circus. I recall my maternal grandad took me to the Pavilion as a 6 yr old for some reason, and I had nightmares about the picture. Can't recall the name of the film but it was set on a boat and someone was put in a sack and thrown in the sea. I know I was terrified and never forgot it. The same when taken inside the wax- works! No wonder I used to sleep walk.....!
Thanks Ron for that bit of info. I remember my dad telling me a tale of going to the Pavilion, it would have been just before the war. He took an orange, and as he was breaking it, the juice shot out, and sprayed the bald head of the man sitting in front of him. The war must have curtailed his future taking of oranges, as there were none. I remember the opening of the Regal, in Lower Ince, in 1939. The cinemas were a God send, for people to forget about the war, for a short time.
Albert that made me laugh- so unintentional of your dad. Reminds me of when I was taken to the Hippodrome ( in the gods of course) and dropped an ice cream on somebody's head. My mam was mortified - I imagine she could have strangled me!
Albert,on that same note, only last week,in a restaurant on Lord St,I was enjoying fish and chips, trying to open a very awkward plastic sachet of tartare sauce,I squirt it all over myself instead of the fish..yuk.
So at the end of October, Maureen, there was a saucy lady on the loose, in Lord Stree.
