My 'LOCAL' when I was about 17 until 21. Brilliant pub, nice friendly landlord and people. I loved going in there. Me and my mate used to play dominoes with the ''older generation' and they didn't like it when we beat them<g>
played darts in there once . a guy who wernt a bad player named tommy ball . also a workmate of mine went in called jack turner . anyone know them ? .
Tommy Ball was a proper character. He lived on THE GREEN in Pemberton. He had three brothers JOHN RALPH and JOE, Ralph was a bit backward as they say Everyone in Pemberton knew him I used to knock about with Joe in my teens although he was older than me He used to play football with our gang on Triangle Valve. Went fishing with him many times. There is a photograph, on the site, of me and Joe holding two jack Pike we had caught in the Figure 8 in the 'LONG WALL' in about 1963.
It was a great pub and always a decent pint served by jovial bar staff.
whups, I knew a John Turner who played dominoes in there, probably the same person, he had two brothers Bill and Joe.
Remember the low door lintel from the snug into the lounge, if you forgot about it you soon remembered when your head hit it.
Ron didn't the Ball family live on Worsley Green instead of The Green whichis on Norley.
Remember seeing RalphJoe and their dad around Peberton years ago.
We were there at the end, on the last night before it closed. We supped up and through our dregs into the fire. There were four of us and the lad who was running it down. So sad to see it shut. Deep in my heart I have a vision of it opening again, maybe in better times when this techno mobile world has run its course...and the old ways return...I wish.
Jimmy Yes it was Worsley Green at the end of Worsley Street.
I like the 'dregs' bit Jarvo - something of the old Coaching Inns about it.
i think he lived near jem lowes & if he worked at golborne cyril it,s him.
cyril he always reminded me of jack palance the actor.
On the first Friday night after I turned 18 I went with a group of my mates to Jem Lowe’s for my maiden drinking session. I had four pints of bitter and could not manage another drop. My mates were happily downing copious amounts of the amber nectar, I think I realised then that I was not going to be a drinker. I never managed to drink that much beer in one session again. But I did enjoy that night very much for the company and banter with the lads .
