I'm sure Ray Smyth will soon be putting a comment or three to this one, if he hasn't already. I remember this scene very well having worked alongside Ray and his merry men back in the late 60s early 70s transhipping tomatoes from the night trunk for delivery to local wholesale markets. I love this picture but wait for it, there will be those 'no doubt' who won't.
Blurred photo not good for my eyes!
Thank you to Ozymandias for the picture, and JJP for his memories of many years ago. For those who cant identify the
location, on the right of the picture are the rear of some
buildings, the front of these properties face on to King Street. To the left, off picture is Wigan North Western Railway Station, and the Robert Baillie Atkinson artic lorry
is facing the yard entrance on Chapel Lane.
sadly now one of the most expensive car parks around and damned ugly
I hadn't noticed it previously, but that looks like an old threepenny bit FG nosed up against the wall near the VW beetle.
Ozy...Some readers might think that your last comments were a coded message!! I think that the Threepenny bit FG could
be one of Tommy Bartons, delivering beers, etc to one of the
nightclubs in King Street. Ray
This was MFI car park by the 1980's.
It's certainly the right colour for one of Barton's Ray, and I assume the sheeted trailer dropped close by would have been one of Baillies.....A.W., this site has served a number of purposes over the years, apart from the one purpose for which it would have been ideally suited in my view, that is, a fully integrated bus and rail terminal, similar to the one that Bolton now boasts. But I'm only a thick wagon driver....well I'm not even one of those any more.
Regards. Ozy.
Ozy..The trailer in the yard is loaded with bales of wool
which would have arrived on night trunk from Portsmouth,
and which would be delivered to Bradford or Keighley.
Regards, Ray.
could the fg belong to halliwells,as they had an offlicence in king st
Hi g p, I have a vague memory of Halliwells, were they a supplier of beers and wines, similar to Bartons ? and are
you aware of any pictures of their vehicles ? Regards, Ray.
This was the L&Y goods depot next to the Wallgate to Ince line. The LNWR good depot was off Chapel Lane on the other side of the West Coast Main Line and the other side of Chapel Lane. That one later became a WH Smith Do It All and is now The Range (I think). What I remember most about Baillie's yard was the Ffyfes banana trailers and I am sure it said it somewhere on the building too.
