This is a site investigation, being carried out using a slip rope and an 'A' frame, probably in connection with a railway bridge reconstruction or widening. This type of rig was in general use up to the early 1960s. If the photo was taken in the Wigan area try to find which bridges have been modified around this time. The line curves to the right beyond the bridge so there won't be that many locations that fit the description. Best of luck.
The site of this photo could be the old line in Lower Ince that ran behind the Old Hall (Coach house). Looking towards Hindley.
I've just heard that the poster of this photo (Keith Jolley) Sadly, passed away last Thursday. (age 55) He was well known in Wigan. His alarm boxes can be seen on many houses in the area. A superb electrician and true gent. RIP Keith.
