I notice that the River Douglas is called Dughouse Brook on the map. My maternal grandmother, Alice Dean, always referred to the river as the "Duggus" which is not much different to Dughouse.

John D. The Douglas was also called the "Asland" at one time.

Modern Ordnance Survey maps of the area still show the two names 'River Asland or Douglas'.
'Douglas' has its origins in the Gaelic 'Dubh Glas', meaning dark water, or dark stream.
This is the route of the A49 from south of Warrington then through Winwick, Newton, Ashton, Wigan and Standish to just south of Preston (Bamber Bridge) where it joins the A6 to Garstang.
